When 'most women in
Goderich are leaving the house
for work or kissing their
husbands and children off for
the day Katherine • Larsen is
shouldering 20 pounds of . mail
and setting off across the south--
west end,of town to deliver it.
Katherine is a letter carrier
and 'is responsible ' for g . ing
the mail to 67 houses or
route each and every day. She
has been delivering the letters
since February • and' not., only
does her own job but fills in for
any of her fellow workers that
are off sick.- ,
She begins work each day at
eight by sorting the mail for her
route and at 8:30 she takes 'a
taxi to her first stop. From
there she is on' foot going door
to door regardless of the
weather or,unfriendly pets. She
caarnot, by post office rules,
carry more than 30 pounds of
mail and if she has more than
that it is taken to a relay box
where she picks it up after she
has completed part of her walk.
Married and -a mother of two,
Katherine does not have any
one reason for takifig on the job
other than money. She says she
enjoys the outdoor work, likes
to walk and can certainly find
something 'to do with the extra
money she brings into the house
each week. '
One of the expenses she has
encountered sine she began
working is flying lessons. She is
in' the process• of Getting her
pilot's licence and hopes to be
flying the family Harvard in
the near future. 'The World War
II plane has belonged to h"er
husband Fred for 10 years but
raising ' the children has
prevented Katherine from
having the time to 'get her
licence.
"I've got one child in,school
and the other one ready, to go
and now I have the time to do
it," she explained.
Doing things she wanted has
been Katherine's habit ever
since she can remember. One
of her projects this past
summer was a trip to Resolute
Bay to visit an. Eskimo friend
IV1'arkoosie, author of Harpoon-
of the Hunter, Katherine haat*
been invited to the north for two
. weeks and just decided to go.
"I'm .31 years old and I've
done just about what, I liked
since the day 1 was born and I'
don't see any 'reason to change
now.
Her two week trek to
Resolute' Bay was spent hun-
ting- seal, fishing and hit-
chhiking- about the north
aboard airlines that operate in
the bush. Other than running
out of food and having to live on
raw ' seal for a while her trip r.
was without anything unusual
by her standards.
She has "trave•lled extensively
in Europe with her husband
who, is a "native of Denmark.
Not ove4-ly impressed with her
vacations she planned some of
her own.such as last year's. She
doesn't' have' any time . off •
corn ink . to her- this year but is
working oh her dream trip for
some time in the "next few
year's.
Exploring the length of the
Amazon ' River is a dream of .
Katherine's and she is in-
vestigating .the ` possibility, of
doing - just. that. 1`Ie`- cousin
spent three ,months there and -
she has gathered knowledge of
the trip. and hopes to take .it
soon.
I'm going to try .to go and I
usually do what I try," she said.
Ncyt a woman liberationist
herself, Katherine sees no
purpose ,in:the movement. Her
opinion of a liberated woman is
one who has lost control of •
oa rything, even her own life.
She feels that when a woman
fights'', for control of her home
and for more• rights at her job
that she ends up; doing all the
work while the men do nothing:,
She added that" these girls end
up doing the housework,
bringing in weekly paycheck or
a portion of it and 'raising a
family while the man does not
function as a man. •
"When someone asks me '
what „ I think about women's
liberation I tell them it is more
like women's prison," she said.
