I keep waiting for something terrible to happen, to come crashing down on me, smothering me, battering me, killing me. Why can't ; accept this serenity as a gift from you? Why can't I just let go and enjoy the harmony and peace that surrounds me at this moment? Is it because I'm afraid to trust you, to believe that with the battering and the bangs of life there is also joy and love and quiet? Help me to see, Lord,, that life is made up of both, and help me to soak up - and enjoy this lovely, peaceful time you're giving me right now. MIINISTER'S WIFE I watched her today at the coffee-klatsch,"Lord, the minister's lonely wife, one of the girls. Speaking the course talk that some women use. `Laughing too loudly, proving too much she wasn't a prude. Oh God, help her to see, to find her identity in You. CREATIVITY 'I feel creative this morning, Lord, so much so I can hardly wait, to finish the beds and get to my typewriter to set down my thoughts that come tumbling out every which way, - demanding my attention,. shouting their commands.. I smooth the sheets quickly, spread the blankets carelessly, and then I remember the people who sleep in these beds. They're so dear to me, Lord, they really deserve the corners tucked in tightly, the pillows fluffed. These rooms should be dusted, too, God, made neat and cheerful I also recall I promised to bake bread today. I.know that takes creativity, too, But please, Lord, help meto find time to get to my typewriter. RICH SIGNAL -STAR, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY V,197 "c ROM IRE MINISTER'S STUDY - BE,THEL PEN' ECOSTAL .lav REV. PETER G. MOAN TABERN CLE Sure a person can 'get along without God! Like a person can get along without health. Like one can get along without 'an arm' or a leg, without sight or hearing. Of course one can get along,.but that person will never be ,what they could be! What kind of a man is it that is willing just to get along? Plenty of people half.broken physically have gotten along in the world.Health hasn't been up to pa'r, but they've managed. They've" made reasonable Success of things, enjoyed a reasonable amount of, hap- piness. Life has been adequate...but not full! A four -engine airliner can' limp along on two or three engines, but what a difference when it's under full power. '• What difference does it make whether or not an individual takes God seriously? After all isn't religion a ;'take it or leave it" proposition? It's good for them that want it. It's all right if a majt leaves it alone. Is it a convenience - or a necessity? Three reasons why' it is im- perative that a person take God seriously: In the firs% place man is in curably religious. If he doesn't follow the true God, he will find a substitute. This is inevitable! (Some of the most religious people are atheists. They believe with all their heart in no God.) becomes a ' might -have -been. That person is something les than his potential. Third, man was-,ti-1;.tde for fellowship with God. To be in tune with reality, in harmony with life, one must be in touch with God. To be out of fellowship with God is t^ be maladjusted. Life is ' 'totted and twisted. It is be like a fish out of water, like a bird with clipped wings. The in- dividual not right with God is never really, right with others and never right within his self. Mankind out of touch with God is ou.t`of line, out of focus, a carjcature of self. An individual is never himself except" the Lord is his God!. A person ruled by God is a person at their best! Most significant of all is one's destiny. God has set eternity in our ,,hea-rts, Three -score -and - ten `-(seventy years) at best leaves one touching the edge of life's possibilities. Fulfillment comes only in eternity. . Jesus says, 'What shall it• profit a man if he gain the whole world and lose his own soul?" (Matthew 16:26) Second,' a person becomes like their god! His or her life. forms and • fashions itself inexorably after-•the-image-of— God (or whatever takes the place of God). Though made'in the image of God, he grows into the image of his idol, which means a person' who follows a false god is less a person than he could be. That person 11 / ERI MEM OR IALS t!"
