the time to
Think Metric
BY D.R BANDY
My mother used to recall an incident that occurred .
when I was 'a child. It seems that on one chilly 4morniil,g
a small friend of mine came. to call for me, and when
my mother asked him, "How cold is it outside, John-
ny?" he replied, "Oh, about an inch!"
To him, of course, this was a fair repre.sentation for
-temperature, .and may have been the actual height of
the mercury_in the thermometer at the time. We're
(More accustomed 'to using. degrees Fahrenheit; and
when the thermometer reads 18 degrees F, we know
just how cold, it is. The Fehrenheit scale uses 32 •
degrees as the' freezing point of water, and 212 degrees
for the boiling point.
The, Metric system has adopted ' the Celsius scale,
developed by a Swedish astronomer. He assigned more
practical values of 0 degrees for the freezing point and
100 degrees for the boiling point, of pure water. Thus
there are 100 Celsius degrees between the ,two `common _
fopoints on this temperature scale. (This is the origin
r the temp Centigrade that is sometimes used when.
referring to this scale. Celsius, however, is the ac-
cepted name for this termperature,scale.)
The two temperature scales are not easily compared,
since they not only have different size degrees, but they
don't start with zero at the same' spot. A comparison
chart is shown at the end of this article. You might find
it handy to use when _listening to weather reports,
• because by April '1, all air temperatures on weather
reports will use only degrees Celsius.
You will. soonrealize that if its two degrees on the
Celsius scale, it's just above freezing; if it's 35 degrees
C, it's ,a real scorcher of a summer day; if your doctor
says your bbdy temperature is -38 degrees C, you are
running, a fever; and' you should , keep your house
thermostdt set at about 22 degrees C. ,d •
If yogi really must convert from Celsius back to
Fahrenheit, you must first multiply by 9/5; and then'
add 32. Thus a temperature of 10.degrees Celsius would '
'be (10 x V/5)- + 32 - 40 degrees Fahrenheit. As you can,
see, it would probably be simpler if you `would just go
an u a Celsius thermometer, use it, and become

Well, these fewi short articleshave--probably done.
little more than make you. realize "that' the Metric
System is nearly upon us, and that to become farniliar,
with it you will just have to use it and "Think Metric".
'•Remember: lengths are in METRES, liquid volumes
in LITRES, mass in GRAMS,,,and if it's 30 degrees C
out, it will probably be a warm summer day!
