lY D. R. 1UNDY
Iti the first article, we talked about ri easur•ement
of LENGTH, using the METRE; and its„decimal fac-
tors.
In, this article; we shall extend our knowledge of the
meji'suren nt; ofm length to the calculation of R'EA and •,.
VOLUI1,ES, -.
We are all familiar with the method of multiplying
the length and width of an object to get the area• in
square inches or ,square feet. Similarly, in the SI or
Metric system, we might meaSUre the dimensions of
this. newspaper page and get the following:' Length —
57 errs, Width — 44 cm. Tl'r'u•s the area of the page would
he nearly 2500 square cm. The notation used, however,
is cm2, rather than sq. cm. ” ,
A house lot might be 10 m by 35 m, and thus have an
area of 350 m2. In the British, system the unit for
measuring- a large area, like a field,"is the acre. In SI,
10,000 m2 is called a• hectare, abbreviated ha.. So a
hectare would -he an area that is 100 m by 100 m •(about
two football fields).
To calculate—solid Volumes, or the capacity of a
room, for example, the length, width and -height are all
multiplied.. This would give the volume ,in m3, or
perhaps cm3, if it .was a small volume: A `sugar cube
has a volume of slightly.,more than 1 ern3...
When talking about liquid volumes, such as the
amount of gasoline in a tank, or the capacity of a jug of
milk, the, SI system' uses .the• unit LITRE, which is .
roughly equivalent to 35 liquid ounces (British)..
An Im,perialgallon is roughly 4.5.litres, so at current
prices., .gas •gill cost you .about. 14 cents per litre, and
when you ask for a fill up; you can expect them to put
in 30 or 40 litres!
-To measure `small volumes, the litre is subdivided
just as' the metre was for length. The most common,
one being the millilitre, which is one -thousandth' of a
litre. Your morning cup•of coffee, for example would.
he about 200 ,ml. A bottle of beer is ,320 ml and a large
(26 ounce) pop bottle is. nearly 750,m1. Many consumer
goods now. have metric volume -labels on them.. Tooth-
paste, for example can .he bought in 75, 100 or 150 ml
sizes: ...
You will have to learn to he watchful to prevent
being `;taken" by changing~ volumes on goods you
purchase in the stores. For example,, I recently at-
tc'mpte•d• to purchase a large bottle of wine at` thfelocal •
• LCBO store, and cho•s:e one which was listed as an, 80.,
ounce bottle for some 20 or 3Q cents, .lo`wet`'than the
other similar brands: I paid! for it, but when At was
• handed to me, I'noticed it was not 80 ounces, but, rather
2 litres! I knew this. to he close to 70 ounces, and.
complained that they wire advertising falsely. They
seemed 'incredulous an'a even went Th -far as to suggest
that there was really no difference!' They ;were very
put out when I' requested my money back, -but I notice
that they -have 'since changed the' listing opposite this
brand t read 2 .litres irlsteati'of 80 dunces! ,,,
Next week we will look- at WEIGHTin the SI s•y 'tem,
