PAGE 2—GODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, AR, l UESDAY. DECEMBER 24, 1974 u i1 G ;9J Once upon a time, there was a writer who liked to tell stories. Often he would link up the gvents in a story with some . contemporary ,happening. The writer was a Doctor named Luke. One of his best knownstories was about a pregnant girl at the time of the first Census: tt was a peculiar kind of Census. There were.. no mail -in -questionnaires. No Census -takers knocked on your door. As a matter of fact, it was the other way around - you knocked on the door of the Census -taker. If you insisted upon doing that to -day, yOu would likely scare the government out of its Cereus. However, the Census tak .rs• today have sophisticated Methods for collec- tng data and feeding it into computers along, with perysion cheques and the time tables of high school students. Tribes) we seem to have lost our Bering. ° The world population is about .three billion. Every month, we -add another six million. In Bethlehem, right in the midst of that first Census, a young couple hada baby. While the whole country thought the important task was to count people, this child came into the world to tell us that people count. ° -Rt. Rev, Wilbur K. I will admit that there was a' period in human evolution when' there was a need to kill for survival. I believe, however, that we have advanced considerably since that time. We are now able to cultivate and manufae- ture all that we require for food and cl6thing. I am sure that animals were not "placed here ori earth only, for their beauty” any • more than were human beings. I do feel, though, that it is a heinous action to take the life of any living creature. I'm sure Mr. Hoy would agree that it cannot be "right" to kill one species of animal, and "wrong" to kill another. Therefore, if' one con dones the Slaughter of cattle; how can he then object tci the hunting of deer? In regard to Mr, Hoy's ad- vfre that I "pack away "(my) fur coats" and "bypass the meat counter" while shopping; I can lay only that his sarcasm has backfired. Had he directed that statement to practically anyone else in the country, his ,argument would have been valid. 1, myself, however, neither wear fur norather,. nor ear the flesh of aninnpls. If I did such things I would not be so hypocritical as to cors-, demo killing. Please, do not misu-n Ierstand me, It is not my intention to push my beliefs on other people, In this case, however, I have no choice other than to defend myself., Sincerely, Diane E. McGee Concerned Dear Editor: I would like to draw the at- tention of the businessmen of Goderich - certainly not all bf them, because I know not all (continued -ori page 3)
