THURSDAY, DECEMBER Christmas greens made holiday through years BY DIANE NAG'ORSEN CONESTOGA JOURNALISM STUDENT Mistletoe and holly have been the subject of Christmas carols, stimulants of affection and the elements of decorations for several hundred years. Mistletoe was used in early religious celebrations of the an- cient Druids and was con- n, sidered a sacred plant. Every year; five days after the:- first new moon, the Druids stood under the tree which bore the most mistletoe in the forest. The Arch Druid cut the lowest bough from the tree' and gave a sprig to each of his followers. The offering was accompanied by a prayer" that each who receives a branch should find divine favor and a blessing from nature". A Scandinavian myth began the custom of kissing beneath mistletoe at Christmas time. The goddess Friega was said to • have stood underneath a sprig of mistletoe which hung from a tree and she offered kisses to those who passed beneeth it. This practice has progressed through the centuries and today thousands of North Americans recognize ' the -mistletoe as a symbol of Christ- mas affection. • Holly was worshipped before Christ's birth' by people who considered its greenness m win- ter as a promise of the sun;•s return in the coming nevi. year. In, early France and Britain, holly was hung on doors to signify that Christ dwelled in these homes. The use of ho11V continued to symbolize Christ and was used at the celebration of his birth. Early Christians believed that Christ's crown of thorns was made from holly leaves and berries. The white berries were turned red by blood drawn from Christ by the thorns: ri,r FINCHER'S MODEL CONTEST, 'WINNERS 19, 1974 n7 CANADA N GAR Senior Division. First — Mike Jones. The grinch won't steal Christmas- inflation might WILKINSON CONESTOGA JOURNALISM STUDENT Our materialistic goals have pow completely destroyed Christmas. The question asked most often ,,isn't what did you get for Christmas b'ut rather how much did Christmas cost you this year. Aside from the few small children who find happiness in their belief of Santa Claus, Christmas has become a sad and expensive affair for a great- many people. The happiness it brings is not worth the price for some people. The pinch will. never steal Christmas but inflation could,. Money has become the source of happiness and although this may not be the only source, it remains the only one ''discovered'. Christmas is essentially the celebration of. the birth of Christ, but for most of us the birth of_Christ is not important any more. The dollar is now the personification of any god — whether that god is Christ or someone else does not really matter. The dollar represents them all. A piece of green paper hasbe me more important than the ontinued existence of mankind. The gif • of sharing, perhaps one of the greatest themes created through Christmas is still existing. But overriding that magnificent gift lies the crime of theft, the element of receiving without giving. Is it really better to give than to receive? Or is it better to receive what someone else has to give? The satisfaction of giving and receiving are equal, One cannot exist without the other. They are two forces that form one facet in the growth of a human being.„ .-y, Love is perhaps fhe greatest example of the equality that exists between giving and taking. A person cannot take • love without giving it. That person will not find happiness. His longing to give love will destroy the gift given to him. The same holds true in the giving and taking of material things. 'One cannot be totally satisfied by receiving gifts of material value if he, is unable to give in return. This Christmas try and give someone you know an ex- pression of your lov.e instead of an expression of your pocket book. That, is the iteatest gift a person cangive or receive. And as a result, you din realize substantial . savings in overall operating costs on each of these cars as compared to last year's models. These impressive savings range from oyer $440 on the '75 Impala to more than $1,000 on the Delta 88 over 50,000 miles of - driving...say about 4 year's worth. , How? Through the money you would save on gas and scheduled maintenance costs. For example" let's compare the 1975 Chevrolet Impala with its 1974 counter- part. Based on Urban Driving Tests conducted by the U.S. Government's Environmental Protection Agency, which emphasize stop -and -go city driving, the '75 Impala, using unleaded gasoline showy about a 10% mileage improvement over the '74. model using leaded fuel, Our own proving ground tests, which include suburban -type driving conditions, confirm this 10% improvement. Over 50,000 miles, that amounts to 315 fewer gallon§ of gas. If you paid 67.9c per gallon, whi*allows a 3c per gallon increase for unleaded fuel over regular fuel, this represents a net savings of $130 (these calculations could vary depending or >the prices of leaded and unleaded fuel in your area). Now, let's compare scheduled' maintenance costs. If you followed the owner's manual for recommended service, the '75 Impala with the Maxr- mum•Mileage Systerfi could save you nearly $310 on parts, lubricants and . labor over the '74 model Using leaded fuel. Since the System features GM's Catalytic Converter, High Energ Ignition, Fast Warm-up Carburetion and Steel -belted Radial Tires, the predominant savings occur in fewer scheduled changes for spark plugs, oil, oil filters and lubrications. And with our Maximum Mileage System, there are ho points or ignition condenser to replace. Of course, parts and labor costs will vary throughout the country, but we've used current list prices and figured labor at $11 per hour. 'All together; then, when you add'it all up, it amounts to an impressive • savings of over $440 on the Impala and even more on these other cars. ,Which is another reason why we say that The System is the most advanced engineering and technology we can offer on 1975 General Motors cars. We want you to drive what you like and like wheat you drive. JIM HAYTER McG-EE CHEVROLET-.OLDSMQBIL[ 74 KINGSTON S1`., GODERICH, 5244314 PONTIAC BUICK CADILLAC HAMILTON ST.,G'DERnCH, 5244391 4
