The Goderich Signal-Star, 1974-12-05, Page 12 (2)PAGE 12A—GODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, THURSDAY, DECEMBE 5, 1974 ROUND AND ABOUUi1TH MARTHA So much has happened in the-,.._ last few• weeks that I hardly know if I'm coming or going - or have BEEN! Actually, I've been busier than most at this time -but still feel I'm not accomplishing • anything. My husbands sudden illness really complicated things, of course- but I'm happy to report' he is corning along nicely - thanks to the T.LLC. Of many many people. When he starts bossing me a"round-you can bet he is on the way to recovery and we want to thank our, nany, many friends for their krndne5' and concern. I just shudder to think what would•have happened to him if "Mustard Report" had become a fact - and we had had to take him to a "Centre" fifty or more miles away. Then, to - make + it worse we DO take a few minutes to do this. Our medical system is pretty darned good right now - would probably have -spent the next hour making up reports before • he could be admitted. Doesn't the thought just shake you, too? I' li admit I know little about this "Mustard _Report" and it is shocking to find .few people know any more than I 2 but, there is one thing we can do, - we can. ask our doctors and lawyers about it. Also, Dr. Mills has a sum- mary •of this report in which he, has the story in the Caymans' language, the story condensed to where you can begin to get the message. Once this conies thru' you suddenly realize it is getting too late to do anything about it. Because this can only be changed or held up bi' sen- ding a petition to our members of, Parliament - such as Mr. Robert McKinley M.P.P. Mr. -Murray Gaunt M.P.P. Mr. jack Riddell M.P.P. -.or some other member of the House, we should send. a letter 'RIGHT NOW -rejecting Dr. Mustard's back on the market. Call her at 4-7157. Did you know you might win a bushel of apples when you buy a bushel from Bell's Fruit Farm on RR 2? Sounds GREAT. And Diane's Doll Clothes are Martha. Cornwallis Island, :ap -proximately 60 miles due east of the north magnetic pole in the Northwest Territories, is about 3,100 square miles in area, or 900 square miles larger than 'Prince Edward Island. * * * Mystical poinsettias BY GAIL COOPER CONESTOGA JOURNALISM STUDENT 4, Most Qhristmas traditions originaterrin Europe but the colorful flaming starlike poin- settia is native to this con- tinent. The poinsettia was first in- troduced to the United States in 1828 by Dr. 'Joel Robert Poinsett, for .whom it was named, the first United -States minister to Mexico. The brilliant'qropical plant, native to Mexico, is called "Flor de la Noche Buena'' by the people of Mexico and all of Central America. Translated it means ,"Flower of the holy Night". - A Mexican legend of an' or- phan boy explains its origin. An orphan boy, named Pedro finished his daily errands.and There were hardly enough to buy his evening rneal. His friends wanted him to come -- 'with them to the cathedra* He refused as h had no money to buy a gift for the Christ child. One of his friends pointed to • a weed by the side of the road and said for Pedro to take it as a gift. Hesitantly Pedro picked Y r -up the stringy weed, climbed the steep hill to the church and 'slowly made his way to the altar with its Nacimiento = the Mexican manger scene. Kneeling 'before the altar he reverently placed his gift before the figure of the Christ child. As he knelt at the altar, head down, he heard the crowd mur- muring. Lifting his head he saw a beautiful scarlet flower where only dried leaves had existed a moment before. - His 'humble offering had been miraculously transformed. The top leaves of the poinset- tia are flani'ing red, pink or white and are often mistaken a for the flowers, which are small and inconspicuous. The actual flowers are in a cluster subten- ded by a large yellow sticky gland., G 4 t, Thank.
