Ron and Peg Shaw moved;
CHF suggests new help project
The Canadian Hunger Foun-
dation is appealing. to the
people of. Goderich to raise
funds to aid ,the work of ,Ron
and Peggy Shaw in the
establishment of a Cattle
Multiplication Centre near
Tahoua, Niger. Mr. Shaw is a
former reporter -photographer
• with the Signal -Star.
In a letter received this week,
Susan • McCoy, project officer
(Africa), said, "I realize that
you will shortly be faced with a
decision regarding ;the
allocation -"cif the funds which
the` people of Goderich have
beelr. raising for the "Melepha
Well Project". Unfortunately,
there is little likelihood that
this -project will he implemen-
ted, as the" person. whom we
had hoped, would undertake to
manage the well -cleaning
program has decided to leave
Niger,
Ron and Peggy were then
asked by the Niger government
to move from Maradi ,to
Taboua (150 miles north-west)
to. give technical assistance to
°the establishment of a Cattle
Multiplication Centre. The cen-
tre is the first of several plan-
ned as part of Niger,s program
to reconstitute nomadic cattle
herds which •were destroyed
during the drought."
Ms. McCoy asks that funds,
be cgllected instead, for the
purpose of 4roviding "Vehicle
• Support" to the Shaws' project.
The_ work the Shaws are
doing is a valuable con-
tribution to one of the most im-
portant programs to
rehabilitate and develop Niger,
MNMcCoy said. Realizing that
a vehicle is essential to
maximize the effectiveness of
'their contribution, the CHF has
undertaken to purchase a
Volksw,atgen "Jeep" for the
project. The vehicle* will he
°donated r to an a.pproprijat.e :'
group in Niger when the Shaws..
return to Canada.
"I am hoping that the people
of Goderich . might accept to
contribute in the rnahtier. • of
purchasing a vehicle, to
development in the Sahel. I
realize that aid of this type is
not so dra.matic as emergency
food relief, ,or as concrete as
digging a well, but if'countries
in the Sahel are, ever to achieve
anything approaching self-
sufficiency,. then grass-roots
agricultural development is the
key," Ms. McCoy pointed out..
Niger, lacking technicians, or
the financial resources to pur-
chase technical skills or equip-
ment (such as vehicles), par-
ticularly needs the services of
volunteers 'such a5 Ron and
Peggy Shaw. '
"I believe 'that by con
▪ trihuting to the Shaws' work in
Niger, and through -them to the
reconstitution. of the Nomad's
livestock, that Godetich .would
.be giving a very real and
needed assistance to the people
of Niger," Ms. McCoy went on.
The total cost . of the
Volkswagen ;"Jeep", plus in-
surance, 'maintenance, repairs,
gas and oil for two years, is
$10,000.
The Shaws were sent to
Niger,,in .June 1974. Both have ..
a background in farming. Mr.
Shaw also received refresher
'°ehurses in animal htsbandry., •
during his orientation and
training period' at the CHF bet-
ween April and June, 1974.
• From the time of their
arrival until October, the
Shaws worked at an animal
breeding centre, setting up •a
selective goat -breeding
program, and training a local
technician. to take over im-
plementation of the program.
