Local artists visit
Ontario Art Gallery
. BY LORNA VINCENT
WITH THE
GODERICH ART CLUB
The Goderich Art Club ac-
companied by friends and other
area residents went on a char-
tered bus trip to the recently
opened Ontario • Art Gallery.
,This trip had been arranged by
the President, Lu Legg with the
help of Mr. Berryman of the
Travel flub.
• It -turned out to be a dart,
rainy day with heavy smog
banging over Toronto like a
grey curtain, which dramatized
the group's entrance into the
spacious, brightly -lit lobby .of
the gallery. Comfortable,
upholstered seats ° were
arranged around. a fountain of
ever-changing coloured, electric
tubular lighting:_ The scene',in-
vited rest and relaxation,:
:' Lunch was, in the charming
Grange Restaurant where leafy
trees growing in tubs were
placed strategically among the
tables.
After lunch members were
joined by a very well-informed
guide who introduced them to
the Henry Moore Court with its
priceless collection of drawings
. and sculpture.. Even though his
work -is difficult for the layman
to understand one recognizes
his unique genius. Henry
Moore's .inspiration seems to
emanate from Man as aowhole
both inside 'and out, rather
than just the surface, and also
what - motivates • Man. A
beautiful marble sculpture was
• shaped from the idea. of spinal
vertebra separated yet : formed
in lyrical continuity of pattern.
A series of intricate drawings
were made from the skull of an
elephant which had been
presented to Henry Moore by a
friend. He pictured the interior
from every angle in the most
authentic detail. These shapes
from creatures of the earth in-
spire much of his work.
Another series or: dramatic
drawings made in the crowded
bomb shelters of London,
England during the last war
held a strong emotional clout
for the viewer. Henry Moore's -
towering female figures which
seemed to rise from the soil like „
a symbolic Earth „Mother,
although somewftat distorted in
shape, their very massiveness
impressed the viewer with an
indomitalble. strength.
It seemed like the collective
triumph of Man` over his en-
vironment and it made one as
an individual, feel puny in
mind and body: Eye)) with such
little enlightment, Gode'rich
guests could only conclude that
Henry Moore is a great genius
of our time and Canadians
were fortunate indeed to
inherit his masterpieces.
The gallery 'of Canadian
paintings where ,most of, the
Group of Seven were represen-
ted, an well as many lesser
•
known Canadian artists,. was
greatly enjoyed. The European
gallery held paintings which
the writer remembered as a
school -girl' in Toronto as well
as • impressive new additions
• representing -the various
° schools of many countries,–
On
ountriesOn the ground floor opposite
the entrance and •at a lower
level, a large area is surroun-
ded' by grgcefuh classic arches.
-This space has been'created for'
many cultural purposes such as
concerts, films, lectures and
special exhibitions. The
surrounding walls form a
gallery for the display of ab-
stract and other modern art.
Some of these paintings were
ugly to some eyes, and' one.
which was remembered from
the National Art Gallery, Ot-
tawa consisted of a group of
shapeless black blotches on an
off'white background.
The refurbished Grange,
which is connected to the art
gallery by a' tunnel, formerly
belonged` to the Boulton family
whose portraits grace its walls.
This gracious house was built
in the early eighteen hundreds,
-and from the kitchen and ser-
vants quarters in the basement'
to the upstairs bedrooms, it
creates a feeling of the elegant
life-style at'that time. Members
viewed films of the changes
made over the years on house
and •property. `tThen in the .can-
dle -lit basement they enjoyed. -
sample's' of '.home-made bread
from the brick oven. This had
been made with the tools of the
time by a woman dressed in
authentic costume. The entire
house is furnished with pir-
celess antiques. ' `
Lastly; the Goderich group
visited the gallery shop, an
area where one could, browse
for hours among fascinating
prints, cards and books on
every phase of arts .and. crafts.
Everyone interested In art
should find a visit to this
spacious modern gallery 'a
rewarding experience. •
The Art Club hopes to
arrange other such expeditions
next year.
