Silent- Night old favourite BY BETTY ANN BAGLEY CONESTOGA JOURNALISM STUDENT Silent Night is the best -loved and most widely used of all the Christmas carols and has been translated into no .less than ninety languages- and dialects. The carol was written Mohr, a Catholic priest who lived in Oberndorf, an obscure village near Salzburg, Austria. As happens frequently' with matters that 'rapidly achieve world fame, legends gathered around the origin of this song and one is compelled to critically choose between fact and fancy. One attempt to explain the background of the song relates that at a Christmas celebration in the local schoolhouse Mohr withdrew, for a short time and returned some time later with'a folded sheet of paper on which he had rapidly written ' the carol. • Another report states that Mohr had attended a crude dramatization of the Christmas story and had been so deeply moved by it that he climbed to the small mountain outside the town and let the night speak to NNW ■ I ` 11 •` 1111tt>alr R[AL ,‘, ice► ;lion mo111111111L- ESTATE voliNv 91111/ him, -with the result he went - home at midnight and com- posed the noted hymn. The universal appeal of the hymn is the beautiful and progressive portrayal of the nativity' -scene, from the quiet darkness to the flood of light with the shepherds and the kingly figures bringing not only _gifts but Paying homage of genuine"" e" v"' ar i """" In 1848 the carol began its journey around the world in the Methodist song book of the time, "The` Devotional Har- mony." Today in addition to being the most' widely used carol of any other, it has been the subject of numerous ar- ticles, stories, plays and more recently a movie. During the Christmas season as you participate in the singing of this well-known in- spiring carol remember its heritage and take pride in the - link that that unknown priest so any years ago established for us with 'our forefathers. Just as you find peace and warmth in the lyrics and music this hymn creates, so has every family for generations past.
