'All over the world people use
th'e tradition of sending Christ-
mas cards to renew old friend-
ships. This symbol of the spirit
and • goodwill which is abun-
dant at Christmas time 'dates
from ancient cultures.
In ancient Egypt, the new
year was celebrated with the
exchange of symbolic presents
such as scrolls with inscriptions
of good luck. The Roman
'tradition of ,.`Strertae' was
originally the giving or fruits;
pastry or branches of laurel of
'olive. Later, the symbol of
seasonal goodwill to 'fellow
Romans became a
Roman lamp with a figure of
Victory inscribed, 'May the new
year be happy and luck for you'
The first, modern Christmas
card was designed in England
by J.C. Horsley in 1843. The
card depicted a family party
with the w,prds, 'A Merry,
Christmas and a Happy New
Year to You' beneath it. It was
printed on a 5'!4 ' by 3114 piece
