The Goderich Signal-Star, 1974-12-05, Page 3Dear Reader€..... (Continued from page 2 top the polls because of her out- standing performance during the 1973-74 term of office. Frank Walkom edged Leroy Harrison for fourth spot by a slim .22 vote, and newcomer Bob Allen held down the sixth and final seat with 1115 solid votes. *** My personal thanks go out to 'the remaining six candidates who sought support in Mcfn- day's mandate. They 'didn't, win but maybe they'll be back in 1976. One thing must be said, however. Of all the, newcomers to the Goderich municipal scene, only Kay Leamen and Joan Van den Broeck have showed an interest in council by attending meetings on a regular basis (Mrs. Leamen has been more faithful than Mrs. Van den Broeck, in fact).. It is to be • hoped these two ladies will not lose their interest in council. meetings. . . and that their example may be followed by some of the other candidates in this 'year's election as well as many, many -other Goderich folk who are interested in the affairs of Goderich. -,I must say I was a little sur- prised that.at the last meeting of Goderich Town Council before the election, there was not more candidates present to observe, Only Mrs. Leamen was in attendance. Council business is not child's play in this day and age. It takes- more than a desire to serve and one council meeting a week. It takes hours and hours of deliberation on tough, tough decisions. It takes homework. It takes • talent. It takes' broad shoulders. when criticism is levelled. It takes every ounce of responsible fibre anyone can muster. Everyone should get out to council meetings, most of all persons •who are aspiring to of- fice in the future. See you there! Again I would like to stress that game reports, scores and future games are not being han- ded in on time. The Pee Wee B's played Saturday night and won over Clinton 12-0, and the Midget B's played last week and lost - no details. All ieports should be handpd- in after the game or the next day to my of- fice at.26 The Square. GRAHAM ELECTRIC - NOVICE ALL 'STARS The Electrics this year seem to be a hot and cold team and last Satnrday night was not a night when they were hot. After wins of 9-2 and 9-0, the -boys met South London and found out what it was like to lose big themselves 16-1. 4. GODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, THURSDAY, "DECEMBER 5, 1974 • PAGE 3 Although therrseemed to he some doubt of which category the London team belOnged to, our boys 'did not show the aggressiveness they had displayed in previous games.. A slowistartio the game put us'in hot water in the first period. Daryl Madge notched the Electric's only goal' on a .breakaway in the first period at the 9:46 mark. This Saturday, Exeter will be herek for?' a 5 o'clock game and then it's off to Huron East in London for a 4 o'clock game. We're hoping that the boys get back to their aggressive pla'y they have shown for the last couple of games. Scott Middel had an assist on Dead deer Dear Editor, As I pushed open the door of the bank this afternoon I was met with an. icy blast of wind, but this was not .the only "'chilling blast with which I .was • confronted. What I saw was the cold and lifeless body of a once beautiful animal. A deer. Its fur and fibre being cal•l.ously •frozen by the raw. wind. -Tied indifferently to the back of a , truck, Unglorious. Dead. To think that someone had cruelly and doldbloodedly mur- dered this splendid creature fills me _with anger and disgust. I cannot understand what drives people to kill under the guise of 'sport.' Think about it. The only difference between the slaying of an animal and a •human being is the legality and social acceptance. Only when a, sufficient 'num- her of right-thinking people speak ,out. against the atrocities which 'are committed around thein can we ever hope to see a change, Life is too precious for us to remain silent. Sincerely, Diane 'E. McGee Goderich • Poor organtzatton Dear 'Editor: 'We wish to express our views . as parents of small childreo who stood in a -mob in order fo,r our children to visit Santa. We have a feW questions -to put to the organizers who arranged for the distrihUtion of the candy and‘the vigit with Santa. • For the papt two years we have stoodein a mob of children and' have beeri shoved and pushed around. There 'afe two entrances into the Theatre. Why wasn't there someone in front of the theatre at the very beginning td tell the children that wanted the candy only, to line up on the left side and the children, who wanted to visit Santa to line up on the right side? The police finally arrived and told the crowd to move back. The people at the back were pushing forWard ancl-,our small-. children were being squashed in between. Several children were crying and got separated from their parents. Several parents left in disgust without their children vis, iting Santa. The police were trying their best but it was poorly.organized from the start. After standing in line for more than an hour, being shoved back and forth, our five year old tells us. that -it wasn't Santa Claus because his beard .was taped on and'he had work Our taxes are high enough in this Town. Surely we can afford a better coStume for Santa. , Mr. Mike Dymond, the Recreation . Director, was in charge of organizing this farce: He, was asked' pblitely if it could 6e better organized next year and he responded with "this is as organized as it can be and,,if you can do better, you organize it next, year." . VVell, Mr. Dymond, for the past two years it has been nothing. but bedlam because of , poor organization. When Santa was at the 'Arena three years ago, it was very .organized. There was no shoving and pushing. When we were' children, we don't recall any of the barbaric action's 'that were displayed in the past two years. What has •happened to our society? Time limit Dear Editor,. • With our attention .on the election it might be overlooked that Friday,' December 13, is the deadline for submitting notices of objection (or support) to By-law Number 48 of.which copies were mailed reeently to all. households. This by-law was hastily. created at a special meeting following ,the Municipal Board hearing into the shopping plaza situation and I felt as I feel now, that it would work against the'practice of reasonably plan- .- ned and controlled commercial growth in the areas adjacent to The. Square. Particularly some parts of North Nelson and ,Victoria will go. under general' commercial zoning, meaning -that any -kind of ,commercial establishment can be automatically erected ,next door ,to you (if •the property becomes available) . without the controls of re- zoning. This new by-law replaces the By-law Number 34 Which ,thiS very Same council had , passed ' earlier this year op the advice of the planners. For thet first time, voters in Goderich could meet all the candidates in their oWn living room, listen- to their views ,and decide their choice. Now that the ice has been broken in this for,m of com- munication it is to be hoped that council will make full use of television during 'their terrri in office. It ,is a sign of hope' for the future of .Goderich,, that this, election produced so Many can= didates for office iand,,that the media were so deeply. involyed. There- is no doubt in. my mind that Goderich is growing and the next few years will• bring about many changes and challenges: We shall need a strong and active Council.,The four incumbents who were re- elected and the two new mem- bers seem to, have all the qualifications to become this type of Council. - To iny fellow losers*— I know how disappointed you must feel but at the same tirde, !et me remind you that there 'are many ways of serving your town other than becoming council mem- bers better luck next—time!
