Something was phoney
A promotion firm operating
out ,of Ottawa or Edmonton un-
der several different ,names,
has been soliciting advertising
by telephone for- various
unknown publications, and
then billing merchants for ads,
even if they initially refused to
purchase the ad. ,i
Gordon Sanderson of the
London FrE:ee Press, reported
last week that London. was
being flodded with phone calls
from salesmen soliciting ads for
Children's Christmas Carol
Annual, Children's Circus
Book and Children's Traffic
Safety Annual. Now, the calls
are spreading to Goderich.
A local merchant, Mrs. H.W.
Gauley, owner of the Bluewater
Market, 119• Bayfield' Rd.', `said
she received a long distance
call -fro,m ' Ottawa; .late one
evening, several weeks ggor.She,
was asked to purchase an ad in
Children's Traffic Safety An-
nual.
She -sensed that "something
was phoney", and refused to,
purchase the ad. Later, she
received an invoice for $32.50,
for the ad. The money' was to
be sent to, an address in. Ed
monton. She did not send the
• money. •
.Mrs. Gauley was contacted
again by '.telephone, recently,
and was asked to purchase an
ad in Children's Christmas
Carol Annual.
"They make it sound very
convincing", she added, but, "I
said, if it's legitimate, come
' around to the store."
She has not been contacted
since. She *as told that the
books would be distributed top
retarded children.
Mr. Sanderson said that the
advertising salesman refused to
give the firm's name and ad-
dress, but "when pressed,
«referred to a !Ms. Younger at
an Ottawa telephone number".
He has tried repeatedly to
reach Mrs. Younger, but "she is
never there and does not
respond to call-back
messages." .

Damage could run as high as
$4Q,000 in a fire Tuesday night
that destroyed part of a large
corn dryer at the• Fleming Feed
Mill on Irwin Street in Clinton.
Clinton volunteer firemen
were called -to the scene about
10 p.m. and when they arrived,
flames were shooting out the
top of the 65 foot stru7cture
which dries grain and• corn
before it is stored in nearby
silos.
Included in the, ,.estimated
$40,000 loss was about $7,000
worth of corn which was iri the'
dryer 'at the . time of the fire.
The dryer holds about 2,500
bushels of corn.
Clinton Firemen were forced
to cut open the side of the dryer
in order to get at the burning
corn, shovel it out, and put out
the fire. They were an the scene
until 3:30 a.m. Wednesday
morning.
No cause for the blaze was
available at press time, but
Fire Chief Clarence . Neilans
said it was being investigated.,
The dryerjs fed forced hot air
that is heated by a natural gas
blower.
Bill Fleming of Clinton, the
owner, said that the fire for-
tunately came near -the end of
the corn drying season and
there wasn't much corn left to
dry.
