dance, Huron County
Federation of Agriculture held
its annual banquet and meeting
in Ontario St. United Chtitch
Hall, Clinton, recently. Donald
Pullen, Huron agriculture
representative, conducted elec-
tion.
Douglas Fortune, RR 1,
Winghani,,Turnberry dairy far-
mer, was re-elected president
by acclamation, together with
Adrian Vos, Blyth', East
Wawanosh Township, as first
vice-president, and Vincent
Austin, RR 1, Ashfield Town-
ship, as second vice-president.
Three new directors -at -large
also were elected from the floor
by secret ballot: Douglas
Cameron, RR 7, Lucknow,� Ash-
field Township; Howard Arm-
strong, RR 1, Zurich. Stanley
Township; and Albert Erb, RR
2, Zurich, Hay Township.
There were two other can-
didates.
Scrutineers were: Russell Ar-
cher, Clinton; Barry Johnston,

Bruce County; John Van-
dereyk, Perth County.
Mrs. Audrey Stanley, RR 5,,
Clinton, who took office Sep-
tember 1, will continue as,,
secretary -treasurer, an appoin-
tive office.
' The balance of the new
County directors will be selec-
ted at the next directors'
meeting on November 14.
Douglas Fortune presided
and welcomed all present. Vin -
(fent Austin introduced those at
the head table:
"The past year has been one
of change and progress in
Huron County Federatio of
Agriculture", • Mr. Fortune
pointed out. "Our. member 'p
has increased from about 1,500
hast year to almost 2,200 this
year, thanks to the work of our
fieldman Bill Crawford, and
Vince Austin and. the many far-
mers who gave- some of their
time to help sell memberships.

membership, and partly duke to
the need of Clinton Community

Ontario Treasurer John White
has • warned:
Speaking to county wardens
and regional chairman at the
annual conference of the '
Association,, of Counties and
Regions of Ontario, Mr. White
said the Ontario government
cannot match all the financial
needs of the ' municipalities in
1974-75.
The province, he said, is".
passing $2.4 billion along to the
municipaliities in 1.974-75 - an
increase of $250 million over
.the previous fiscal year - .and
cannot '.improve. oil, that/v.--
Repeated

cial `grants over the , past five
years have made it possible for
the municipalities to maintain
a high level of services while '
becoming less dependent on
property taxation for their
revenues.
. The Treasurer said
municipalities expecting ad-
ditional provincial help should
instead adopt one or several of

Relating ,the provincial

raised ' taxes all we can. We
have borrowed money to .the•
limit of prudence. We are doing
our hest to hold the line on
spending. We cannot,and will s
not raise .taxes any further,
"And so I say to all
municipalities: 'Now it's your
turn." '
"Not -for a moment do I
dispute your need for more
money than we provide. Not for
a second would I argue that
you couldn't spend that extra
money to good advantage,
"But the money is not
available. We don't have if and
we see no practical, reasonable
o
way to get it for you.",-,.„
Mr. White said the federal
government 'is in a better
position than•'the "province is to
help the •municipalities, since
Ottawa enjoyed revenue in-
creases .of, 17 per cent last year
and more than 20 per cent this
yeah. .'

may tell you he won't provide
any extra money, but don't let
him tell you he can't," •he said.,

Bill Crawford, fieldman for
the Huron Federation, reported
that paid members now num-
ber 2,158, making Huron the
•largest Federation in. the
Province.' A total of $07 had,
been signed up last winter.
Many problems arise from time
to time but are dealt with as
they emerge, he said.
