Jean 'etressed the fact that each child should have a space in the home which is his or hers to do his "own thing.". Whether this space is a playroom or a corner in the bedroom 'or kitchen depends on the home. Jean warned that the atten- tion span of a pre-schooler is short. He may read a dozen boqks arid play with five or six toys in less than half an hour. She stressed. that books should be bright viiith many colored pictures to catch his eye, but small enough to pick up and read. The "read -to -books" should also be colorful with stimulating stories. The local library has a great many bopks which mother can borrow. Jean went all out to demon- strate that toys should be durable with her own childhood doll whose arms fell off while she was illustrating the rough treatment she gave it as a child. Thank goodness, it was repairable. Nothing,. is more 'disappointing than a toy that falls apart the first day. Toys do not have to be ex- pensive. A grocery box, .homemade bean bag, spoons, pots, pans, etc. •can stimulate the child's imagination and be more fun than an expensive push button' toy which may not. hold the child's attention. With instruments from the G.P.H. rhythm band, Jean ex- plained how a child's sense ,of rhythm 'could be developed with -two. sticks to bang together. A tamborine could be made from two paper plates sewn or stapled together with beans to make the rattle. Bells bought at the Variety store can be threaded on a elastic to make a musical instrument. These instruments can be used to play along with the child's favorite record. Let your child be artistic with paper and washable poster paints. Jean illustrated with art done by 3-5 year olds. The shapes and forms may not be your idea of a tree or a dog but it is that child's. You should allow him to create. Give him positive support. ideas. Next week's column will tell about the fun we had dancing to the rhythm of Mary Lynn Telford's bagpipe records and the thought provoking discussion on ,"Nuclear' Power and Our Energy Needs", led by Mary Ann Shaniihan. Thank you Jean for the many hours of preparation and thought you gave to make our Wednesday morning, a metnorable learning eXperience. The women rounded off the morning by forming groups and discussing how they kept their children busy at home. Many of the mothers were interested in the table Set 'up by Gwen Kiar to illustrate the interesting designs made by potato prints and poster paint, how. easy it is to make a tamborine out of 2 paper plates and some beans and many other fascinating •.
