How to Prevent Fires in the Home
More 'than half the fires,and most deaths from fire
occur in homes. Practically all can be prevented by
heeding these simple rules,.
• SMOKING — Do not smoke w bed, in the attic, closets or
garage
MATCHES = Keep out of reach of children's hands. Place used`
matches in incombustibfe trays Keep "strike anywhere"
matches in closed metal boxes "Safety matches" are safest.
EXTINGUISH SMOKES AND MATCHES BEFORE DISCARDING.
BE SURE THEY ARE COLD
Never use matches to look for articles. in.4ark places. Flash-
lights are safe, `
TRASH AND RUBBISH — Keep cleaned out, especially in base-
, ment, attic, closets and garage. If by-laws permit, burn
safely and never on windy days. Use rubbish burners in
•
built-up areas. WATCH FIRES TILL OUT.

FLUES AND HEATING PLANTS — Have them cleaned, examined
and repaired if necessary once a year. Protect exposed wood-
work with incombustible shields or mats Do not pass stove-
. pipes through feedings, roofs or wooden partitions. NEVER
OVERHEAT. •
FLU,E $TOPS — Use metal kind. Do not paper .over flue holed or
• stuff with rags.
ASHES Use only metal receptacles. Do not dump hot ashes
against anything Which can burn.
GASOLINE, 'KEROSENE, BENZINE, NAPTHA —.Do .not store or
use'on homb premises. They give off explosive vyp,�urs even
at very low temperatures.— • ^�7
ELECTRICITY — Have a licensed 'electriciando' all electrical work
and repairs Do not use Tamp -cord for circuit extensions or
' hang it over nails.
ELECTRICAL FUSES —,Use 15 ampere fuse for ordinary circuits.
• Never plug blow -n fus,es with pennie.s nor rep,Iace, with over-
size fuses. Keep extra fuses on hand. -
CHARCOAL BARBECUES --,-Do not use in confined area or build-
ings, ALWAYS •USE CAUTION WHEN STARTING.. -
•ELECTRICAL 'APPLIANCES — Chec`k cords regularly. Replace if
breaks or fraying appear

ELECTRIC IRONS — Always disconnect_before leaving them.

GAS TUBING — Replace -with rigid pipe.
GAS PLATES --- Protect underneath with asbestos covered with
metal.
OIL BURNERS — Use
the Underwriters'
Association. Look
only equipment

OPEN LIGHTS, LAMPS — Do not have near curtains or combust-
ible material.
OILY MOPS, OILY RAGS — Keep mop in closed metal can.
