The Goderich Signal-Star, 1974-09-26, Page 5• a. ra, United Soccer News Happy (?) ••f1 tumn, United' fans, -everywhere! Fantastic tidings, people! e totally blanked St. Colurnban last Sun- day to a score of 3-0. We did it "cold turkey„ too! It was darned chilly and our staunch United men were a cold bunch of turkeys!! 1-Iave you ever noticed how funny legs look when they turn blue??!! • Both teams went into the first 45 minutes at°half steam. Took them„ quite awhile to warm up and move!' But when they did manage to get their bloodstirred; it Was St. Colum ` ban who took the 'initiative. They were all over ua, checking ouemen and keeping the ball in the Goderich mit: United's goalie Alex Vargapias given quite a workout but managed to„keep his net t un= disturbed. As I've mentioned before; St.Columban is a "terrier” team; they set their determination at "Go" and never give up, literally •until the final seconds of the game. 'Goderich tried hard tb steal this, half away from the op- position and we finally, got a break in the form of a penalty kick *and "you -know -who" took this task with little effort and whipped a beaut of a goal into St. Colurhban's net! That John Gottschalk can really sock 'em in there! With very few minutes left to play in this period; United's Blank S hustle rally carnet() the fore and we knew without a doubt that this game would be ours. We didn't allow our con- fidence to stand in the way of the business at hand; which was to challenge, ,check and• cover. These 3 C's are im- perative to a game's outcome. Goderich was .on the alert to St. Columban's every move and the defense deflected any possible advances from their forward, line., It's a special joy,to see U.d.'orking so well'. together; anticipating and co(npensating for each other. This. second half became definitely Goderich's .own when our second goal of the game was earned by our :very own "Toe", Rick Fisher,» It ,was, fast and hard.,and connected soundly! "Rick has really come into his own. this ,year and we're justifiably proud of him. Right on, "Toe"!,,' Goderich continued to lead the attack and the St. Colum- b'hn zone was swarming with United men! Their goalie was hard put as time after time, within seconds., United, took`shot after shot on goal. (When we've got it tgether; we don't mess around, boy!!). ; Finally after the suspense was driving the fans 'round the, bend; our little "Rookie", lain Lambert laid a beauty'of a Bremen hold practice . after alarm. S!, ♦n y K, GbPERICH SIGNAL -STAR, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 1974., -,PAGE Columban 1,, 3-.p thriller goal on the net and we had totalled up the score to a secure 3-0. Great show, Iain! With very few minutes left to play, St. Columban still con- tinued- to fight to at least break our shut -out, but no such luck. United was on toAtheir tactics and they didn't move an inch, that our men weren't checking them out! The final whistle was gratefully acknowledged and both teams disappeared to the dressing rooms in a .01oud of frost!! There was only one ludicrous moment during the entire -;game; It began to hail and picture if youwill, twenty grown men runhjng around in' shorts, dodging the hail and. you have •got: yourself an all time winner!! Every team member pulled his weight,fo.r,this match and they deserve a hearty "well-done" for their game sportsman - ,)ship and skillful delivery. Unit'ed's trusty ''General", Howie Gottschalk kept his defense on their toes and he displayed some lovely sotteer. You deserve 4 stars, General!! aY Brother Rolf played with 'savvy' and plenty of muscle. • • Way to be "Mighty Mouth'.'! - "Player -of the day" is undoubtedly the "Big H", Harold Refflinghaus. • He played unbelievable soccer . and was everywhere on that field;. passing and pulling off intricate maneuyers „and his fancy footwork was true class! A "Big Mama's Special" is sent out to Clare,Sager who was just generally teriffic and played "right -on" soccer .and Mike Tafeit also receiyes a "special'' for his fantastic efforts. Dave "the Dude" Graf is the recipient of a special award • for his' determinat.ionaand single-minded drive. He played a well -coordinated match and for sheer energy you can't beat Dave. So the very first "Cute -and -Crafty" award goes to this powerhouse guy! ' Very special mentions for "'fain Lambert, Brian Allen, Tony Van Dongen and Rick Fisher who performed with flair and technique.
