. Everybody loves ' a horse, race, ' including trotting fans in
Goderich.
Last Friday night the ' fans turned out in record numbers
_ to watch the tenth race at the Goderich track but their en-
thusiasm for the first nine races proved their love for the
sport. ..
From start to finish the crowd •.bet on the trotters and
cheered their favorites to the wire without exception. But the
class of the night•running in the tenthbrought out the best
in all 2,000 fans. •
. As post time approached people started moving to . ideal
'spots to .watch the match race between Piper Wall and
Derby's Gent. '
The rail was lined with people standing three and four••
deep from the 'barns to the first turn and the stands were
full. Beer drinkers in ' the arena found a window opening
onto the roof andra•crawled throughh:to watch the action.
Track officials and the two kids posting results on -the
board in, the infield left their stations to man the rail and
cheer their ' favorite on. .
The first half mile impressed the fans and they showed
their excitement' with . a constant, cheer as the two horses
trotted bike' and head for the distance.
• Going into the third, turn' Derby's . Gent moved out on
Piper and appeared as though he was going to leave the Kin-
cardine entry his dust but Piper Wall closed the gap in the
backstretch to set the scene for -the dramatic finish everyone
had. waited for.
As the two horses thundered down the stretch for the wire
,people cried "he's going, to do it, he's not going to do -it."
The last 100 feet•brought the crowd to, its feet. Derby's
Gent, the horse everyone had come to see, was 'going to
,remain undefeated. Piper Wall did not have the speed to cut
the lead and finished a very. else second. Their faith had
been restored and the gelding had proved once and for all
perhaps that he. was the best. • -
As the driver paraded Derby's Gent, back in front of the •
grand stand for the victory celebration the crowd roseNt.*d,•
gave the horse a standing ovation. He had broken the record.
He had done what he, came to Goderich to do.

If you go down to Agriculture Park .these' Sunday. and
Thursday nights and catch•a ball °game you may be surprised
by the play of the tean>i in the Softball' league semi-finals.
All the action of the sport can be seen and enjoyed and the
only thing lacking is fans.
• • Fanqsan make or break a game for qne. team. They are
one of the major ingredients of sports. They are a necessity.
Lack of fails atK the softball, playoffs, however, is not
•
,reducing the excitement of the games. One of the games bet-
ween Gord„'s Sports. and Sandy's Clippers went into extra in-
nings to break a tie and'the players for both teams gave the '
fans who went to watch the game'cause for excitement by
continuously making the;`big plays to keep their team in the
contest. •'
This weekend Agriculture Park will be alive with, softball
competition with the' annual ' Labor Day Tournament in
progress but the area playoffs continue. in Septemberi.and`
should 'be. viewed by everyone.
