New record
charted
at track
Derby's Gent put his un-
defeated record on the Jibe last
.Friday night at Goderich
Raceway in the $2,000 W.J.
.Hughes Pace and; retained his
status, setting records`al°ong the
way.
The tenth race at Goderich
was the main attraction on race
night with an original five
horse card reduced to three en-
tries by post timer
The favorite, Derby's Gent'
owned by W. Cadman, with a
perfect fourteen for, fourteen
record was. challenged by Piper
Wall, owned by Dave. Wall,. and
Mr. Peter Ray owned by Peter
Harrison and Ray McLain. The
other two horses scratched'
were Scott's Topic, owned by
Bert Madil and Romeo Lobel',
owned by Mac Galbraith.
At post time the record
crowd, of 2,150 people had
selected Derby°s Gent as, the
favorite with the other °-two_'en,
tries going at surprisingly low
odds.
Derby's Gent's first move in
the second half brought the
crowd to its feet but Piper Wall
closed the .gap at the three
quarter pole and couldn't over-
. • take the Parkhill gelding
finishing', dead .op his heels.
Mr. Peter Ray broke at the
three, quarter pole, and was out
of the. competition.
;Three' records were surpal'ssed
at Friday t'irgh =s; action. The
,,track record` of 2:05 was broken'
by Derby's Gent after he. went
the distance U. 2:Q1.2. The
record crowd 'of 2,160 combined
to set a new betting record -for
the Goderich Raceway, $55,600,
surpassing the old high of
;'$46,000. •

Drugs and Driving
Methods for the detection .of
drugs in fatally injured drivers
have been developed by resear-
• chers in Kansas City, Missouri,,
according to. the Ontario Safety. -
League. A total of -710
specimens (blood, urine,
,alcohol• washes, etc.), suppliede
by coroners and medical
-exarhiners,. were studied. by.,
researchers for forty-four com:
monly used ' drugs. Analytical
results indicated that 58 per
cent of the drivers had
ingested alcohol, and 47 .per
cent were legally dru`ik: Thir-
`teen per cent showed the
presence of a prescription drug,
and .ever Titre 'per cent showed'
the presence of a prescription
drug in"the absence of alcohol.
The predominant type of
'prescription drug f(iund was
sedative and hypnotic. The test
for contact with marijuana
'yielded 38' per cent- mpositive
responses,.
