BY RONNIE VARGA.
Hi there, United Fans! Last Sunday's game resulted in a •-
tie.with Clinton, 1-1. It wasn't the most satisfactory outcome,
but certainly not the worst. It was a rough match, in more
ways than ane! We didn't begin with :fireworks but we sure
ended with a bang!! °
• During the first half,,nothing too fantastic occurred. Clin-
,ton played aggressive soccer and pushed pretty hard. United-
•retaliated in kind, but their efforts seemed to lead nowhere.
There was lots of passing and fine .ball control, but there
weren't too many opportunities for shots -on -goal. '
United appeared uncertain about their plays and unfor-
tunately it wasn'tone of those games where they anticipated
each other's moves. There were plenty of misjudgements and
oVereager reactions. (it happens to be best,,sometimes!) Clin-
ton -kept challenging us. constantly and Goderich met the
challenge, but couldn't quite take over completely. This 'half
ended with 'a scoreless tie.
We were confident for the •last 45 minutes as we started
play. There was the usual scrimmaging to control the ball
-and keep it in the opposition's zone: Eventually something
was bound to give and -it did!
The ,incomparable "Toe" carne through with a fantastic
shot and scored United's single, precious goal! To hear
Rick's version; it was one man against insurmountable ob-
stacles!! (Not quite,, but fairly accurate!) Seriously folks., 'it
''iras a lovely goal and everyone was overjoyed: It,broke some
of the tension the players had been under. ,
Further play resumed and minutes ,afterwards . Clinton
.scored their only goal, from a breakaway and we were on
even ground. Goderich doubled up' on their efforts to chalk
up 'another, point in our favor and became overly aggressive
which resulted in two much -valued team members being
sent off the field. •
Fortunately for us this happened during•the dying minutes
of the game or Clinton could have had a definite advantage.
(Although, they had one mah sent off, as well!) It's unusual
for Goderich t1/4,o lose their cool so ,completely Viand I. can• only
assume it was the pressure. Winning this gamemeant a
great{ deal to us and I guess we "over -psyched" ourselves!! -•,.
' Two . special fellas receive ,,the "Big' Mama',s . Special"
today. •For one; Rick Fisher who gave us our goal and
retained his humble manner throughout! There's noone like
you, "Toe"! (Thank 'goodness!!) Secondly; our present
goalie, Alex,Varg.a. He goalte ided with Bair and daring and
continually came out for the'ball..,(Not bad stuff for an old''
fella!!) . .
"Player=of-the-day" is one again our handsome
"General", Howie Gottschalk, He played solid soccer, and
headed up the` defense with swift and decisive movements.
Way to be,, "Big G"! •
• "Sportsman -of -the -game," is John Gottschalk who played
a hard, fast match and .got plenty of."jogtl•ing, but kept his
wits through the• entire play. I might also mention that John
had to play two different positions (not a't the same time,
folks!) and performed beautifully. • -
Dave,"the Dude" Graf. played, if not his best, at least a
good, competent'game. He is our resident "tryer" -, he never
gives Lip -trying to keep,,United on top!
Clare Sager was forceful and made some lovely plays, as
did Rolf •Gottschalk. (Rolf is a real "hip" player!) Special -
mention for 'the fans again. Thanks for truckin' down to
catch the) game! People are really great!!
We won't be playing another %game for two weeks, sA I"Il
eep you posted about times and places and such! Tune' in
ited and turn on to soccer! .'ail next time, God Bless, keep
nd stay happy. United we' stand - Divided we fall.
Thank you for coacht'ng`, Sandy.
T we ya,
. Foxy.
