appear in the auction sales
lists; there are some entries of
"cash" instead of a name:
The. names, about 30 on each
of a dozen pages -sent by the
University of •Western Ontario
as . of interest here, represent
just about a census of the adult
male •population of the • town,
plus a number. from the town-
ships. Ladies did ..not usually
attend the sales, but the name
"Miss Gardner;' appears once.
This may. have • been Margaret
. Gardner;, whorn.4,A.nthony Allen
'married in 1862. Anthony, of
course, is best remembered in "
connection with Dunlop'ta'ern,
.but at the time of these auction
records he was working in.
Goderich: His father, John, had
rented a house here. He is
listed in the auction records°as
purchaser of a snuffer and tray.
A frequent bidder ' 'was
Robert Gibbons, member of the
first. Goderich .council and .for
many years reeve and warden'.
In -.1852 he had lived for 10
years -on the 'Britannia Road
site of the present Victoria
school, where he had a 'la'rge
. house and several, 'farm
,'buildings.°At the auction, rooms
he was a successful bidder on a
Meat tub, washtub, looking -
glass and other articles.
Issac Rattenbury, who kept
the first;-Briiish. Hotel at
Wellington and Lighthouse
streets, bought several. useful
articles, and James Gentles, of
the Huron . Hotel;'' bid in a
pocket knife.

Pan Lizars, clerk of the
peace, bought a parlor stoVe.
Alex Ross, a future Treasurer
of Ontario, acquired "a half -box
of raisins. ' William Gooding
carried home 'a cruet stand for
which he bid two shillings and
tenpence: Rev. Alex McKid, of
the Church of Scotland, picked
up a garden rake.
These were a few of the tran-
sactions recorded at Goderich
Auction Rooms in the first four
months of 1852. The auctioneer
must- have been Jasper H.
Gooding, inasmuch as no other -
auctioneer i;s ,listedat the time
in Huron. The ,'clerrks J. there
were more than one, judging
from the handwriting -- remain
unidentified, and the location
of theauction rooms is likewise
unknown, but certainly would
have been in the west end.
.Jasper Gooding, was one of
three sons of W.F. Gooding;
who traded with the'Indians at'
:the mouth of the Menesetung
before Dr. Dunlop and John
Galt founded Goderich in 1821. -
The ` Goodings ' prudently,
acquired numerous town "lots in
• .the settlement, including Nos.
3, 4 and 5 on Cobourg street,,,on
which three large brick houses
stand today. Jasper was sheriff
in .1844-45.
. The three brothers married
three .of the four daughters of
Ronald Good, from • Ayrshire.
Gaspe& and Mary Good were
'married- 14., 1832, by Rev.
Thomas. Whitehead of' the
Methodist - Episcopal : church.
here. William rharried Sarah
Good, whb lived to the age of
87 and died at Benmiller in
1906, 12 -years after her
husband. "She was the
Goderich 'Star said, "a land-
mark of Colborne." • Ernest
married Nannie Good.'
W.F. Gooding, the trader,
opened a general store in
Goderich in 1828. His sons
were in.the business wifh him,
W.G. 'Smith-- that wputld'be
the tanner --got -enveloopes.
William Gooding, brother%of
the. auctioneer,- paid two
shillings tenpence for ` a cruet
stand. A man named McBrien
paid tenpence for a brass can •
-
dlestick."'G. Videan, blacksmith,
• acquired a
'pocket
book
,and
a
deck of caf.cts. A pound of tea,
was knocked down to C. Shan-
non for a shilling sixpence.
Other- identifiable - townsmen
who caught the auctioneer's eye
were John Adams, carpenter;
Thomas Kvdd, postmaster;,
Thomas Dancey, ,the lake cap-
tain, Sheriff Henry Hyndman,

William, who became ,post-''
master and later town clerk.
Township visitors included
.Joseph,..Salkeld, of the Bayfield
road; H. Glen, of- Colborne,
who picked .,up ,a 'snuffer°and
tray; W. McElwain, who paid

six shillings ninepence "for a -
churn .and . one pound 11
shillings for a "riding saddle".
"W" McIlwain is not at :the
moment identifiable, but the
McIlwains were and are in
Goderich township. Richard
Jewell of Colborne also got a
sidesaddle, but he was bid up

Thomas Hawkins of ,Port
'Albert is named in the list.
Thomas Gove•nlock,'Hugh
and Thomas' Grieve, came all
the way from McKillop, not
especially to attend'an auction
sae in' January, perhaps, but
each bought
a half -box
of
raisins, -
Goderich business men who ._
dropped in included W.
Storey,' the ,West_ St. tinsmith,
and Williarn Savage, only 22 at
the time, but. later the operator
of .'a sawmill, cooperage,
brickyard .:'' and .store.
