rafts and'. after • the tour,
guests were invited to go across
the road for a cup of tea with
Blanche Garrett,; With the tea
Mrs. Garrett offered many of
her, jams, jellies and 'preserves
with home 'made breid and
butter. It was a delightful treat.
For over a quarter of a cen-
' tury, Mrs. Garrett has been in-
terested in -the plants that grow
in Canada and their uses - both
historical and modern. This
'natu'rally 'accounts • for the
hours spent delving into old
cookbooks, family archives and
many other sources in her
search for the unusual and the
tantalizing recipes for her book.
The•first Canadian Cookbook
was published in Kingston, On-
tario, in 1831 over 100 years
ago. The worn pages reflect a
way of life that dealt with each
day's problems, so along with
direction for making food for
the table each family in the
Community developed its own
Treasury of home remedies.
Mrs. Garrett has searched
through .hundreds of these
books and has } tested and im-
proved upon hundreds of jam,
jelly, pickle, relish, conserve
and wine recipes in order to
compile her unusual collection.
es
Some recipes,are familiar to us
all, but others like pickled fid-
dleheads, rose and clover jelly,
goldenrod wine, maple beer,
and sage and cider jelly may be
less familiar.
Her love of preserving fruits
and vegetables from Canadian
gardens, fields, meadows and
forests learning the mysteries of
a Jelly that gels-and'a `wine that
doesn't turn to vinegar •has
been -a wonderful experience.
