Hamilton
The Square is the heart of
commercial businesses in
Goderich but the streets run-
ning off The Squaire are also.
sue ssful from a financial
standpoint. Hamilton Street
has undergone a number of
commercial .changes recently
and tIle'past month has proven
that the change was a popular
. one for the shoppers.
The corner. of Hamilton'
Street and the Square was
recently vacated by Eedy's
Bakery and Bill Smith, owner
Of Smith's Pro. Hardware,
' enlarged the premises b,y
knocking out the back,„walrl bet-
ween his store and the one
behind it that faces Hamilton
and opening one large hard-''
ware storey
Bill Smith is originally from
Goderich but received ;moat of
his business experience from
work in Toronto and from
operating his other store in
Clinton. He lived in Toronto
for 12 years and worked• as a
salesman for the 3M Company
prior to his .return to Huron
County.
In 1968 he purchased the
McEwan Book Store in Clinton
and remodeled it• to suit his
needs for operating a hardware
store. The .venture proved a
-success and one month ago he
expanded his enterprise and.
'opened a Goderich brhnch.
'opened
that the place to do
. business in Goderich and the •
„place to' operate a business is
on The. Square or the first block
off of it. He feels that the shop-
ping area is -unique and
irreplacable and that every ef-
fort should--be-made to main-
tain it. He feels that traffic
should ,be`kept on The Square
as long as no large problems
develop that would. hinder
business.
Bill , likes being back in
Goderich and hasn't noticed
any big changes in the town in ---
the last 15 years.`"The one big
change I noticed is the develop-
ment over in the south end of
town. All those new . houses
mean a lot. of new faces."
Operating a personalized ser-
vice for his customers is impor-
tant to Bill. He believes that by
following the 01d• -business r,
cliches a man' can tiDe, successful.
"•I • like to treat people the
way I want .to. be .treated," he
:said: "A hardware,store is still
based on personalized service.
We're problem eolvers."
`Life here is far more pleasing
and •satisfying to Bill. ;,`The
pace of` life here is better, the
-,• people are friendlier and there
• is a personal contact and con-
fidence that you. won't find in
the large population centres,
• , he said.
Jack McKinnon manages the
store here in Goderich and has
. three people on staff. .Joan
Bowers, petty, ;Faulkner and
Bill ° Cdw;an are .on hand six
days a week to convey Smith's
policy of the. customer is King

the rear of the building and

. Malone° Owner Ben "Sheardown
attributes the' move to age.
"I am strictly in ',the meat
business both retail and
wholesale now. 1 gave up Lynn
the groceries because, it was too
hectic and ° I didn't enjoy the
work," Mr. Sheardown said.
Business is just as good as it •
"was last year for Ben: He lost
some• oaf his customers but he
, also picked some up from
Becker's. He is operating the -' ,t
business .now at the potential
hg intended when he moved, •
He is open six days a 'week ond
One 'of the three ,staff members
is on hand at all, times to serve
the "customers. -
,Ben is a native of Goderich,
and has been here all his life.
He sailed the lakes' for,a,four
years and -spent five and a half
years in , the army before he
gent into busyness fdr himself.,
He has operated his Own enter-
prise for` 28 years and feels very,
Satisfied with his efforts,
"I love Goderich. The 'people
here are very nice to deal witk
and it is veiry'satisfying work.
The town °is Knowing 'though
. and..,there are a lot of strangers
here that will thke,a while to
'get to
know!'
Quality Frosted Foods is
situated , in the rear of the

Goderich. He likes the change
from the general who cares at-

people much friendlier in
Goderich. "I like Goderich:: The
people are very bice and the
place is so clean and quiet,
there -is no steady noise like the

opened at thud of June the
company did not know what to
expect. The closest Becker's is
in Mitchell and •no one knew
what kii1d"of vat -tithe store

"Business' is very good,"

"'Ve still haven't reached, our
potential yet. We have to stock,
•a lot more articles and we are
always interested to find otit
what people would 'like -tis • to

"The only thing that I' can
see that (iodericb lacks," said
Branko, "is • things for the
`young people to do. They need
more stores directed -at the
younger people and a wider
variety of entertainment."

Approximately six months
ago, Ken Pratt took over • the
business on West Street and
immediately made plans to

operates another similar
business in Strathroy and alter=
nates his time between the two
stores doing service work to
customer's machines.
Mr. Pratt employs one
