Family of lawyers ...

Mr. Hays is remembered as a
tall man, erect in his walk. He
wore a moustache, and
customarily a wing collar. As
with other lawyers in the
family, he took an active part
in community affairs, and was'
, interested in the manufacturing
industries of Goderich, in-
cluding• the Good Roads
Machinery Company and
Goderich Knitting Co.. He was
a. member of the Collegiate
hoard for several years. ` He
practised law in Goderich for
53 years, and was recognized as
dean.of the Huron Bar. He was
a member of St. George's
Church and in politics a Con-
servative. At his death in 1935,
the Huron Expositor noted that
he was "highly esteemed for his

integrity and good' judgement.
Besides, his son, Robert
Cockburn, he was survived by
five daughters.
Claire, wife of Frank C.S.
Evans, died in 1958. The others
are.,Mrs. David Wallace, _Mon`-.
ureal; Mrs. Eleanor Mills,
Elora; Miss ',Catherine Hays
, and Mrs. Adelaide Lucas of
Goderich-.
HIGHLY ESTEEMED
Robert Cockburn =Hays,
Junior, was 40 when his father
died after a long illness, and.
was well established in practice
here. When he died on March,
5, 1967 •he had practised, law,
"Isere for 45 'years and taken
part from his youth in many ac-
tivities of • the community. He
had won to an exceptional
degree the regard of his fellow -
citizens, and tributes paid at
his passing expressed unreser-
ved praise of his life 'and work's.
Born in Goderich on July2,
1895, he attended school here
and was about to commence a
university . course • when he
joined the 26th Canadian In-
fantry. Battalion and went
overseas. Wounded at Cour-
celette, - he was returned to
Canada and then enrolled at
Trinity College, University q
Toronto, where he received his

He was survived by his wife,
the" former Ethel Gibbons
• Nairn; by one son, Robert
Charles, • and' one daughter,
Mrs. Roy Dunlop, of Goderich.

"Glenn Hays does not yet belong
in a historical narrative, being
very much a part of the contem-
porary scene, but biography,
however brief, is essential. He
was born at Seaforth and atten-
ded school there. Graduating
from Osgoode Hall 'in` 1.93.4, he
was called to the. Bar in 1938
and started practice in
Seaforth. In World War 11 he
served as a lieutenant in the
,Royal Canadian Navy. Appoin-
ted Crown Attorney of Hui'6n
in 1948, he moved to
r,Goderici�, and in 1960; became
Provincial . Magistrate and
Judge of the 'Family Court. He
has 4been Provincial Court
• Judge since 1968.
a He was first president of
Goderich. Horticultural Society,
and has been a 'director . of
Huron Historical Society. 'since
its_inception
He married Roberta John-
• ston of Goderich in 1950, and)
they have two daughters, Sarah
Jane and Roberta Johnston•.
Judge Hays ,since 1951 has
resided in a picturesque house
with spacious grounds on Essex
Street, sometimes known as
"The Hous"e of Four Judges",
as it was earlier occupied ,by
f County Judges Wilmot Squier,
James Masson and Edward
Norman Lewis.
