Second of two-parl series by W.E. Elliott
In the 130 -year-old Georgian and on Sept. 29, , 1882, the
house at 33 Montreal Street, Huron Signal announced that

The old couple are selling,_
perhaps to a stranger, the farm
,on which: they shad spent their ,
working lives.
The artist 'who Produced the
originalbpainting (its origin not
now known) was born in the
United States and died there in
1930.'..From the Royal Ontario
Myseum's education services it
is learned that Louis Charles
Moeller was a genre painter
homely subjects in everyday
surroundings. ► In 1870 he went
to Munich to study. In 1884 he
Won the First Hallgarten Prize •
from the•National Academy of
Design in New York. He•
became a . member of that
Academy in 1895, hence the
initials N.A. The Corcoran Art
Gallery in .Washington has une
of his paintings -entitled
Disagreement.
The three persons pictured in
The Deed to the Farm would
• appear to have known, 'each'
other for .many years, the old

to keep it for two° generations. •
In some degree it reflected the
character of their own" law
practice. Neither, so. far as learf-

court ,from rtime to time on civil
litigation, but enjoyed a large
practice - as , solicitors.•

TH•E' STRACHAN OUSE
From, 1903, Mr. Htiys owned
and occupied the house on'
.Wellington St. which now
belongs to Dr. R.W. Hughes. It
is on the site of the Rattenbury
House, presumably demolished
before Isaac Rattenbury sold
•the lot in 1877. to^ Donald C.
Strachan. AdornM•acVicar
built the present house for
Strachan, .who operated, a
•grocery store "in the Albion
Block," and whose `residence,
the Signal stated, was "one of
_the most •elegant and substan-
tial in our town." To a noted
Ontario architect, it appears as
if the owner had taken a
European tour and "come un-
' der the, spell of the splendors of
Paris," There is no record of
Mr. Strachan visiting Europe,
but it is recalled that on Sab-
bath days he' shook the col lec-
tion box in Knox Presbyterian
Church.
On January 14, 1933, Mr:
Hays celebrated his 80th birth•
day anniversary by going about
his customary duties, "proud
and thankful," the Goderich
Star said, "to have reached the
80th milestone while still' in
