You are cordially invited to celebrate with us in a victory celebration! We are novo' the proud recipients of the London and District Soccer Association 3rd Division Cup! (18 teams from all over Western Ontario • participated) Yessiree! we beat out Clinton on Sunday to the tune of 3-1 and were ' we singing!! We'd had a previous game on Saturday against the 1st Division Ingersoll ,Flyers and lost. But this was a "heavy" team- for us' and if ,we had pulled up our socks, we might have lessened the shock of 'a 4-1 score and come out looking a , little less trounced!! As it was, - they ,were a technically knowledgeable, hard -driving doteawmn! - and they just ware us In the first half they snappecP:'" off four goals and left Goalie , Alex looking .dazed and slightly sheepish', but they were " proficient and knew how to hit and where to hit. In' the second halfwe were given a penalty kick' and John Gottschalk whip-, ped one on t; m and deprived them' of a's 34:t -out! • This was a great'game fpr ab- sorbing and learning std' we came. away wiser • but not sad- der ras we badn't really expec- ted oto --win, (but we sure could have socked -more goals into their net!!) United . played a slightly.. "off" game during the first 45 minutes but we were into our own' for. the 'second half. (witness: no more scoring for Ingersoll!) "Player -of -the -Day Award goes to Dave Graf. What more can you say about "Dave t'he. Dude"? He always gives his heart and soul to each match . and fon "get-up and go" -he rates atop honors!- Clare Sager • played a good, steady, game along with Pete Herlufson who was a strong 'contributor for our cause! Rolf Gottschalk and brother John, maneuvered, for thee.a;e with daring and skill. (Brother Howie was "decked" and missed ' the remainder of the game! So they carried on for him and no "gap" was noticed. So. to Many thanks to all. the extra fans who travelled to ,Ingersoll to catch this' ,game. Your,, loyalty ' is gratefully acknoWledged! As for Sunday's game, well, this was our shining hour! The +aUnited fellas were'primed and timed, tuned -up and turned - on!! Never has a ga.rne been so exciting and - tension -filled! Clinton was determined (as were we!) to win this "challenge", bt HfJnited didn't swerve in their objective; which was to take home the ' third Division Cup! During the '-beginning half Clinton was awarded a penalty kick and they `cored their point against us. ° This was all Goderich needed and they clamped down " and began the' attack in earnest! Man tor man, and play for play there wasn't one iota of slop- • piness or indecision on United's part. They were beautiful and strong! They covered their man, retrieved the ball and reacted with _...sureness and confidence. Each play set up was a joy to behold! As fran- tically as Clinton worked . to wear dawn our resistance, we weren't to be swayed from our. purpose! Although we preven- ted' the opposition from, further scoring on our net; we didn't pass up',Any opportunity. Starting off on your run of goals was "the big if", Harold Refflinghaus..He zapped in a shot that resounded with force and sureness, (assisting was . With the score chalked in at 2-1, we knew we had them panicked and the United guys gave `them cause to worry!! Nearingthe finish, pf this period of play, reliable Harold scored another goal that has to be the "zinger" ofthe season!. It cattle from a free kick from r''Tony Van Don8en at centre field which he passed to Harold at the 18 yard line who then "headed" it with powerful authority bang on into the Clin- ton net. This caused a commotion on the field and on the sidelines never- before witnessed! There were cheers,- tears Y and uninhibited ' happiness from team players .and fans!!
