The Goderich Signal-Star, 1974-08-01, Page 10•PAQE l,(--GODERIcH SIGNAL.',STAR, TH JRSDAY, AUGUST 1. 1974
I've been wandering again. It
was noir far, but .was most .en:
joyable. Every year I -promise.
myself that I will spend some
time -at an Art School. Every
year for many years - I have
missed it for some no good '
reason or other.,
Since we have a very good
Art School. not too many ,miles
away Southampton run by a •
very nice artist from- Goderich,
it seemed ridiculous that a.1
didn't -go there. Edna Johnson,
director, convinced me that I
shouldn't miss again especially
when she had such .a fine line-
up of teachers this year, again.
Herb Aries, head of the Art
Department of Beal Tec• ` Lon-
don, is a really big name in the
art world. •He.,has a great num-
ber of 'fine art students to his
credit who are now making a
name for themselves, one of
whom, Eric Luce, teaches at the
Southampton ,School. •
Mr. Ariss, a person of won,
derful personality, knowledge
and the ability to teach -,,,,,which
many -good artists do not have,
was thoroughly enjoyed by a
dozen• or more students. Altho'
I haven't much to show forthe
week,• I hope some of , his
teaching,. has penetrated • my
wall •of bad habits - in art, that
., is.
Last week' with another great
teacher, Corbett Gray, . I
" managed. to get in a half week.
Corbett Gray is an outstan-
ding, landGCa ie and ,portrait
painter.' He is Director of the
Arts at Guelph College' and,
also a terrific person. •
• • Here too; „I am hoping some
of this good 'association with
such a fine artist' will have rub-,
bed off, .a'bit on me, A"few days
instruction,. here and there,
can't .be expected to do much
° good; blit it is better than none'
a t all.- p
' Mrs. Johnson' has had the
• 4 '
.school 'for nine- or more years
with a list of top artists
teaching there' I took advan-
tage of the studio. It just seems
to"make you want to work and'
paint even tho' ' you've had 'a
big 'day out on • location. Also
you find ' the other students,
many from distant cities, Very
interesting. So, you can see my
little •,'vacationst were most
satisfying and I wish more were
ava ilable.
Sunitizerfest, again this year
was a big success, perhaps as
some say it was a bigger Success
for the Kinsmen, anyway,
Bigger tent, bigger.•••
I think everyone enjoyed it
and most,certainly those taking
,part had 'a very rewarding few
days. One thing that, comes up
each year is... Why don't you
have art or crafts e,very
weekend.. .or any time in the
Courthouse Park, o itside of the
Specialdays? So, why don't we?
It is ideal for this kind,of thing
' and I'm -sure there would be no
objections as long as sit didn't
create a nuisance or something.
,So you timid artists and craft-
speople think about .it.
Another thing. Art in the
Park is 'very popular, • now, in
'many cities on the weekend.
Many artists are' tied up during
the week so this is great for
'them, also it is very nice to
.wander at leisure on the
weekend looking at the pain- '
tings.
We .should give it a try - I
wonder how many -Would show?
