Hi, Soccer People! Long time no see! For some reason, last
week's write-up didn't quite make its adz we've got three
games to catch up' on!
The Goderich United team chalked up two wins'an,d one
loss. The, two wins were Cup Games and .J,a'st Sunday's loss
was a regular League game. - W
To begin !lith; we played against a 2nd Division team two
weeks ago; the London Lions 'B' and we camefou .looking
pretty good with a score of 2-1.. United didn't exactly, per
form at peak level, but the guys did their,. utmost to score
goals, and keep the opposition on the run. The opposing
team was a skilled grout and gave our defense a real
workout. .
In the starting half, they scored the first goal and further
„scoring didn't occur until late .in the second half when
H'arol'd Refflinghaus was given a break and he latched onto
that ball and scored -one of the best goals seen in _a, long
time!•He maneuvered With -the ball and Allayed havoc with
the Lions defense and shot squarely on the net to land a
well'earned goal for United. _Minutes later, Rick isher
made good on an opportunityand tried a lovely of on
goal. Unfortunately, the goalie was in the way! Th ball
bounced off his leg and over to Pete Teichert at the 8 yd. ti
line. Pete instinctively acted on this good fortune and kicked
ja long shot on goal and landed our second winning goal of
the match! These guys of ours, really "zonked" this team!
The following Wedtn'esday was a semi-final game for third,
Division Cup and we were pitted against;,St. Columban. We
• ' (k were right oh for this garne and got it on like "Wow"!!
Goderich began the first 45 minutes full of pep and vinegar
and played a controlled and unified half. The 'boys had°it
over St. Columban for skill, but we couldn't dismiss this
team lightly. They're dogged and determined! The play was
exciting to watch andathere was lots of action to justify this-
excitement?'
hinexcitement
United was on`" the attack constantly and the defense,
headed' by„ Howie'Gottschalk walk superb. is.s somedne later
• mentioned, Howie wasitke aGeneral with his men; conduc-
ting maneuvers, charging and attacking, destroying the op-
position's defense line until' it was completely nullified!,
There's no one like Howie!!
Early in this half, the first and only goal of the game was
gained for Goderich by Brian Allen. Howie Gottschalk had
taken control of 'the ball and came up to center field, passed
it.over to Rick Fisher who then passed it back over to Howie
and from there Howie sent it to Brian who took control and
shot it firmly into St. Columban's net. It was a terrific triple
play' and well executed. Shows you what team work can • -.and family had a holiday in
produce!! Well,,done, guys! Rockton on Saturday' and
The action continued in the second half and there were
great plays and great saves by the United men, but further
scoring wasn't in the cards! So the match ended witsh'a 1'-0
score and we did some heavy celebrating that night!!
Special mentions for Clare Sager'and Bill Wedlock. Clare
played tip-top soccer and Bill was a controlled and vigorous
performer. "Player -of -the -day" was without a single doubt,
° Howie Gottschalk: (He also receives the U`Big Mama's
Special"! 'What did you do'to deserve:ethat fate, Horst??!!)
The "Showmanship Award". goes to Brian "the Brake" ,
Allen. He,does a tumbling act that would•turn a trapeze ar-
tist green with envy!! .(That's the way the cookie tumbles!)
Carl 'Moller protected the °goal with cunning' and daring.
whish resulted. in a shutout for us. Pete Teichert played a
hard steady game and Rick Fisher was fantastic. I've never
Seen ,"the Toe 'looking ..so cool! Harold Refflinghaus.
produced some "flak" for;rSt. Cdlumban_. and 'set up some
lovely•plays. Great work; one and all! ' • '
'Last Sunday's gamewas not so hot! (Beg your pardon; the
day was liot - the play was not!!) We dost 1=0 to Hellas in
London and we really should have and could have won! Too
bad the fellas'didn't get it together"; cause we could 'have,
used this win. But fate didn't favour us and we have to lump
it! The United team„was really off and it shred and no
matter how hardsome guys tried it didn't come off to ad-
-
vantage. •

The "Hellas fellas” scored the only goal of the day in the
first half. - United fought to come back but when everyone's
playing their own game, what can you hope to, accomplish?
You .need solidarity .and unity to win' every game. The
• second 45 minutes was a' little better, with some shots on the
• Hellas net, but 'no results. Actually, 'thtre was more going on
at the sidelines ,than on the field!! A few of.the fans were
hassling each other, and fisticuffs seemed to be the next
event on the agenda!! But order prevailed and we all
declared a frosty truce! a ,
It was really great to see Dave Graf back in the fray again.
You rate a special award, Dave. It's the "never -say -'die',' '`
