The Goderich Signal-Star, 1974-07-18, Page 14Pk,G I4—OOD RICH SIGNAL -STAR, THURSDAY, JULY Iii, 1971 united Soccer News BY BONNIE VARGA 'teoplet Goderich United didn't 'win the game last week, • but neither, did we lose! We tied the match with. the German. -Canadians 2-2. That was a, good team we played and we were kept at constant attention ,keeping the odds event {Huh??) The London team started off the first. 45 minutes with a goal (cute =trick, Rolf!!) and Goderich was busy with the at- tack from then on. Midway through this half, -e were awar- ded a free kick and Brian Allen was elected to this task and scored a goal bre 'die! With the score 1.1, we were breathing easier (the fans, that is!) and ' the •play continued at a breakneck pace. Minutes later, t1i opposition scored again and shortly afti r the a whistle called` this half to a halt. The German -Canadians are ahard-driving team and were very much in control. Theyhandled the ball (you don't use your hands in soccer, so shouldn't the vw.ord be ' `footied", as you do use your feet? Just asking!!) with ease and craftiness and checked our men at every turn. With the second half, scarcely begun, a fantastic head shot from Harold Ref flinghaus gained us our second and tying goal. (Got a terrific shiner and an Excedrin headache - for that• effort eh. Harold?'?) . An added note for this particular goal; it ,was on a long, lovely pass, way over from left field over to Harold on the ,right, from "Whip" Wedlock; No small feat, that assist! It sure looked terrific, Bill! • • The remainder of this half was well played and lots of ef- fort put out, but no further goals were forthcoming, The fellas made a lot of great plays and performed some fancy. footwork as_ well. (even did a little "Harlem Globetrotters" routine!!) The teams were gratified to hear that final whistle irking the finish' of the game. It was hot and muggy and 90 utes of pounding up and down -`the field .can w'ear you do Th were p style to team" m "Class" tea our mettle!! • There was • German=Canadians were a .great .team to play" as we rforming at peak level to demonstrate our skill and advantage.
