The Goderich Signal-Star, 1974-06-27, Page 27Knox WMS reports response encouraging to blessing boxes The June meeting of Knox Church Women's Missionary Society Afternoon Auxiliary was held onn Tuesday, June 18 with the president Mrs. Clayton Edward inthe chair. In the ab- sence of the secretary, Mrs. Gordon ,Kaitt; ig, who is on a motor trip to the West Coast, the assistant secretary. Mrs. Jas. Porton acted. ' • Minutes of the last meeting were read and. adopted. Thirty members responded to the roll call and two 'visitors were welcomed. Mrs. F. MacDonald conduc- ted the devotions, 'reading responsively the 118th Psalm from the New Book of Praise. This was followed with prayer by Mrs. 'C. Cutt. Miss Ethel Elder reported a good response for the semi- annual donation to the Blessing Boxes. The Friendship Convener reported a total of. 121 calls made by the members. Mrs. F. MacDonald read several thank -you notes, from 'sick memftrs who had received .flowers from the May meeting. During July and August if any member khows of a member being ill, pleases con- tact Mrs. H. Rivers (524-8496), who is taking over . Mrs. MacDonald's duties for the two months. The members were sorry to hear of Mrs. W.E. Elliott's misfortune, having -fractured her wrist. Mrs. N. McNeil remindecPthe members that 6renewals and Huron ACO new subscriptions .Cor The Glad .Tidings will be 1 ceived at the September meeting. The devotions of "The Least Coin", were conducted by Mrs. .Erskine. Suggestions were received for, a special speaker for the Annual Thank-offering, meeting in ,October, also for a W.M.S. Church service in • November. Mrs. Robert McAllister then presented the program for the afternoon, first calling on Mrs. Enright, president of Huron Presbyterial: and was appoin- ted delegate to the Council or the Western Division of " the Presbyterian Church in Canada, which was held in Ewart College May 27 -May 30. The theme was "Forward-- wideltiing our vision with Courage, Confidence, Constant in Service." This being the 60th Anniver- sary of thisCouncil, the symbol used was the one used on the 60th Anniversary of the Korean Church in Japan, with their permission. Next, Miss Hazel MacDonald, who was privileged to attend two sessions of, the General Assem- bly of the Presbyterian Church in Canada, this year held in Kitchener, reported being present for the Induction of the new Moderator, Rev Hugh Davidson, a very impressive service. Agriculture •- Building. President, Mrs:• Joan Van den Broeck presided. She welcomed the visitors from Clinton and for their ,benefit explained the,,, objectives of A.C.O. It was reported on the Huron Historic Jail Board -whose founding had been at the in- stigation of the Huron County. Branch. A report on the annual meeting in Toronto was given by Mrs; Kinney. ,She spoke of the tour of Union Station which had 'been conducted by Dr. Douglas Richardson. An account was given by 'Gordon Duern concerning the Clinton Town Hall which is un- der • study for renewal or replacement and of his part in the proposal for the rejuvination of downtown C1in-, '.� ton. Nick Hill presented the story of the plans for tht Goderich. Square and showedslides of the "Before' and After" drawings as well as slides of 'the 'renovations' in Elora and, Petrolia. Concern for the preservation of back copies of the Signal - Star - had been expressed by various members. Mrs. Shirley Keller has been contacted on this question and assurance was gin .that a room is being provided in . the new Signal- Star building for their care. A committee °was set up to a?r na ge for a display at the Goderich Art Mart. During the social hour pic- tures brought by Kelvin Jervis from the Public Archives in Ot- tawa of early Harbor scenes in Goderich, of the Garrow 'house and of the Thomas Mercer Jones house (the Park House) as well as • the . scrap books belonging to Mrs. Kinney were on view, It has been arranged that the June meeting will' -be held in the Governor's 'House of the Huron Historic Jail at .8 .p.m. on Wednesday, June 26. Mrs. Clayton Edward men- tioned a really great thrill she had last ,Year when attending a wedding, in Scotland to be privileged on the Sunday mor- ning to attend a service in St. Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh. Mrs. McAllister then referred to an article in the United Church Observer written by Rev. E.H. Johnston, a former Moderator of the Presbyterian Church, in the article he referred to Dr, Norman Bathune in China, a Canadian who has become a hero to the Chinese. A much loved hymn irr the new Book of Praise "Amazing Grace" with Mrs. E. Edwards as pianist. At the close of the meeting a social half hour was enjoyed. Domtar pensions improved Grafi Miss Faye Bradley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Bradley 128 Warren St., Goderich, has recently graduated from St. Joseph's Regional School of ‘°' Nursing, London. About 15 former employees Of the Sifto Salt division of" Domtar Chemicals .Ltd. will benefit from a pension increase the company announced recen- tly. The increase, retroactive to January.. 1, 1974,' is three per- cent of the pension now paid to each former employee multiplied by the number of years° of • retirement prior to January 1, 1963. This -means that those retired the longest benefit 'the most, the cotnpany reported. The increases apply to about 3,000 persons across Canada and willcost the company an extra $500,000 per year. Both hourly and salaried em- ployees will benefit from the pension increase. They include persons who retiredfrom many separate companies which operated prior a merger in 1961. TN TALK James Thomas Boyes, son of Mrs. Mattie Boyes of Goderich, graduated from the University of Western 'Ontario, June 4, ,receiving a B.A. in Social Science. He is .a graduate of Goderich District Collegiate In- ,...,atitute and Stratford Teachers' College. Mr. Boyes teaches school in Sarnia. Lake levels high Lake Huron now is about 22 inches above its long-term average level and about one foot below its record high set in 1886, the United States Lake Survey Center reports.°. The lake is expected to peak in July at a level slightly below last summer's 'high. Mrs. 5 Nine new members local Cubs report active year enjoyed The Fourth Goderich Cub Pack, sponsored by- North Street'United Church, reports a busy , schedule during its last season between October and June. The Cubs visited the Weather Station -at Sky Har- bor, the . Goderich Police Station and the water treat- ment plant. The boys also went on two field trips to Point Farms Provincial Park and one trip to the Falls Conservation Area. They learned to build and light fires ,using natural materials and to prepare simple.- hot meals: In February, the cubs`had a Father and Son Banquet during- Baden Powell week. Nine new members joined the pack bringing its membership td '8 •this year. Several cubs moved up to scouting and others joined packs in other areas . • The year's activities ended -with an overnight camping trip June 15 at the Scout Camp south of Godert9h. Cub master Charles Adams publicly thanks the Group Committee for supplying and preparing food for the trip and Jack Hoffineyer for allowing the cubs to, swim in his pool.
