if they sent Cameron back.
Thiswarningis attributed to
)William Cornelius Van Horne,
general manager and future
president pf the railway com-
pany. He issued it in connection
with the general election of
1887, when ' Canada was
choosing her sixth Parliament.
In Pierre•Berton's book, -The
Last Spike, date of the incident
is given as February 26. Polling
took place. on February 22, so
Van Horne's remark must be
read as comment upon the
result in West Huron, where
M.C. Cameron, Liberal, was
defeated by Robert' Porter,
Conservative, by 27 votes,

attacks from leaders of the
Liberal party. Politics were not
forgotten when the company
began to spread out in Western
Ontario. The Credit Valley
Railway, the Toronto, Grey &
Bruce and other branch lines
were built or projected.
Goderich at the time had en-
joyed Grand Trunk service for
many years, but evidently
'desirecompetition.
The West Huron election
returns cannot be said to show
any significant result or Van
Horne's pre-election pressure.
Cameron was opposed by
Robert Porter, a Scottish -born
farmer, as he had been in 1878
and 1882. In 1878 th•. were
candidates in South ron,
which did not include Goderich
or Colborne Township. In 1882'
they met in West Huron and
Cameron won by 29. In 1887,
• the year of the CPR issue, the
riding elected Porter, Conser-
vative in a turnover of 56 votes.
Goderich township gave its
largest majority of the three
contests for Porter - 216.
Colborne, which is 1882. gave
Cameron 209 votes, increased
this to 244, but the Tories roun-
ded
oun-ded up 242 for Porter in place
of 18I' in the •1882 contest, and
the township thus yielded a
Liberal majority of only 2.
Clinton, which in two
previous contest gave small
Liberal . majorities, 'came up
with a majority of 52 for Porter
on this occasion. Goderich
polled 537 votes in 1882,
producing a majority of one for
Cameron,' but population
evidently had increased by
1887 and 686 voted giving a
majority of 24 for Cameron,
and this in the town to which
Van Horne had delivered his
ultimatum.
The Sig,naU'°s .post-election
head: "West Huron lost
through Tory bribery. It at-
trihut.ed the result to a
gerrymander of the riding and
"a big supply of government
money."
'Someone identified only as
R.J.D. wrote verses entitled
"The Downfall of Cameron,"
and the . final stanza connects
the CPR and the election:
"Departed spirits of the mighty
dead
Gome . forth and witness
Cameron hide his head.
Two things we've won, which
Grits have tried to mar:
Protection to our rights, and
CPR."
Van Horne did not actually
promise that Goderich would
get a CPR branch if Cameron
were defeated, but Cameron
was defeated, and the town did.
not get the CPR for' exactly 20
years.
Results: in the West must
have satisfied Van Horne - 14
Conservatives and one Liberal.
The new House of Commons
was made up 'of 123 Conser-
vatives, (including 33 from
Quebec) and 92 Liberals.
According to ,the • Canadian
Dictionary of 'Parliament,
Robert Porter opposed
Cameron for a fourth time in
1891, and was again defeated.
He became postmaster of Clin-
ton from 1895 until his death in
1901.'
