The great 100 -foot long, blue
and whitestriped . theatre tent
was raised Wednesday, June 19
at 1:00 p.m.. at the farmsite
headquarters, of the Huron
Country Playhouse on the
Stephen B Line off Highway 81,
one mile east of Grand Bend.
-The first event in the tent
takes plage Saturday, June 22,
when the Johnny Downs Or-
chestra plays at the gala Pre -
Season Dance, just three days
:before opening night of summer
theatre attractions. The
Playhouse Guild is sponsoring
this event especially for season
`ticket holders, *as part of the
$20 package which subscribers
to the 1974 season receive. Sub-
scriptions are available from
various outlets in and around
Grand Bend and Kincardine
and, according to Guild
president Mrs. Mel Gaiser' of
Exeter; will also be available at
the door on the dance night.
A season ticket holder, in ad-
dition to attending the dance,
sees eight hit shows from
Broadway and ,the West End,

The Christian "Farmers
Federation is pleased that far-
mers are included in the Land ,
Speculation Tax Act.
A strongly worded letter has
been sent to all members of On
tario's Legislative Assembly by
the Provincial Board of the
Christian Fai hers Federation
expressing appreciation that
farmers are not exempt from
the Land Speculation Tax Act.
The' letter points out that
bona .fide farmers are in-
terested in a profitable
agricultusre--no.t., lucrative
sidelines;
Martin Verkuyl, President of
the province -wide Federation
says, "We want ;agricultural
.programs geared to those that
are in the industry now and
plan to stay there—not for
those . who are leaving. Those
selling out at .high speculative•
prices should lose the right CO
be classified as bona fide far-
mers. Our government should
adopt the recommendations of
the Advisory Committee on,,
Farre Classification. Many
speculators would then not ,be
classified as farmers.'
F,,lher t van Donkersgoed,
secretary -manager of the
Drayton -based organization, is
concerned . that the Land
Speculation Tax. Act could
have been the first :step toward
a ,government-sponsored in-
surance policy ,for speculators..
If_ we,_as. farmers, . had.. been.
given the' "right"- .to speculate
under `this legislation, it must
follow that we also have a right
to compensation " when zoning
curtails . that so-called right,"
said Mr. van Donkersgoed.
The C.F.F. is seeking a
provincial land use pTilicy that
will keep prime land in
agricultural ,production. Its
members are prepared to accept
such zoning restrictions
without seeking ariy coMpen-
sation for loss. of development
rights.
On the subject of having the
speculation tax deductible
before capital gains tax, Mr:
van Donkersgoed says, "This
wou-ld defeat the purpose of the
legislation.' Should this happen,
the Christian Farmers
Federation is prepared to
recommend that the tax be
raised to 100% of speculative
profits."
