Parkhill Gazette; The Zurich
Citizens -News; The Blyth Stan-
dard; The Wingham Advance -
Times; The Listowel Banner;
The Seaforth Huron Expositor;
'Th9 Southampton Beacon; The
Port Elgin Times; The Wiarton
Echo; and The Mildmay
Towne and Country.Crier.
At the end of the week, other
things go through' the
pressroom crew's hands.
Things like the Huron Shop-
ping News which is a press run
of 16,000 twice a month!
• The Huron Church News, the
official Anglican paper for the
Dioceses of Huron; is 25,000
copies ,once a month for 11
• months of the year!
The latest publication for
Buchanan and staff is The,
Toronto. Anglican which is
42,000 copies once a month!
- The Village Squire, Huron's
only magazine -type publication
which' is published once every
four weeks at Blyth by Keith
Roulston, requires a pressrun
of 3,000.,
Now that summer is here
again, racing forms will occupy
a large part of the press crew's
week. Racing forms from four
local tracks - Goderich, Clin- -
- ton, Elmira and Woodstock -
are ., printed right here at the
Signal -Star in conjunction with
Clinton Commercial Printers.
John's' smile broadens as he
boasts that 12 tonsof
newsprint , are required by
Signal -Star. Publishing Limited
every week!
"When I started here, we
used 14 tons of paper per
• year," states -John with obvious
pride of accomplishment.
About eight tons cif ink -
black - is used : per year 'with
another ton of color thrown in
for those special jobs. It takes
1-7 5 sheets of line film per
week, 1.00 sheets of 11" x 14"
film for half -tones perweek
plus 140 aluminium plates.
He spends thousands of
dollars every year on behalf of
the Signal -Star. He purchases
over $80,000 worth of
newsprint every 12 months plus
almost everything else in the
way of equipment and supplies
for the entire operation.
"I guess I spend around
$175,000 of Signal -Star money
every' year," says Buchanan,
reflecting on the mounds of in-
voices on his desk.
And John Buchanan also
disposes of things 'which the
Signal -Star no longer ,requires.
He's a first-rate salesman, as
many can attest, with a bit of
'horse -trader thrown. in.
Everybody gets a bargain from
John; but the Signal -Star never
loses a dollar.
There's ' ncrdoubt -about it.
.JohnBuchanan has come a
long way since those early days
of his career at the Signal -Star.
But for him, it is only the,
beginning.
The new press .ewas the first
step towards building. the
badness of today, but the move
into " a new luiiding, another
Buchanan dream now reality,
has opened new and exciting
doors which leave the Signal -
Star's production manager
with enough challenge to hold
his interest for another decade
or so.
"Since moving into,the ,new
building," John muses, laving
bacJ in his comfortable office
chat , "working conditions have
improved many, many times
and extea space allows prac-
tically unli`tnited capabilities in
size and quantity of runs."
'A\ have every, reason to
believe," predicts John, now
leaning forward with the tind
of enthusiasm which catches
