The latest publication for Buchanan and staff is The, Toronto. Anglican which is 42,000 copies once a month! - The Village Squire, Huron's only magazine -type publication which' is published once every four weeks at Blyth by Keith Roulston, requires a pressrun of 3,000., Now that summer is here again, racing forms will occupy a large part of the press crew's week. Racing forms from four local tracks - Goderich, Clin- - - ton, Elmira and Woodstock - are ., printed right here at the Signal -Star in conjunction with Clinton Commercial Printers. John's' smile broadens as he boasts that 12 tonsof newsprint , are required by Signal -Star. Publishing Limited every week! "When I started here, we used 14 tons of paper per • year," states -John with obvious pride of accomplishment. About eight tons cif ink - black - is used : per year 'with another ton of color thrown in for those special jobs. It takes 1-7 5 sheets of line film per week, 1.00 sheets of 11" x 14" film for half -tones perweek plus 140 aluminium plates. He spends thousands of dollars every year on behalf of the Signal -Star. He purchases over $80,000 worth of newsprint every 12 months plus almost everything else in the way of equipment and supplies for the entire operation. "I guess I spend around $175,000 of Signal -Star money every' year," says Buchanan, reflecting on the mounds of in- voices on his desk. And John Buchanan also disposes of things 'which the Signal -Star no longer ,requires. He's a first-rate salesman, as many can attest, with a bit of 'horse -trader thrown. in. Everybody gets a bargain from John; but the Signal -Star never loses a dollar. There's ' ncrdoubt -about it. .JohnBuchanan has come a long way since those early days of his career at the Signal -Star. But for him, it is only the, beginning. The new press .ewas the first step towards building. the badness of today, but the move into " a new luiiding, another Buchanan dream now reality, has opened new and exciting doors which leave the Signal - Star's production manager with enough challenge to hold his interest for another decade or so. "Since moving into,the ,new building," John muses, laving bacJ in his comfortable office chat , "working conditions have improved many, many times and extea space allows prac- tically unli`tnited capabilities in size and quantity of runs."
