Senior. Citizens in the limelight
For the fourth consecutive
year the 'Province of Ontario
has set aside a special week to
focus attention on its elderly
Sunday, June 16 marks the
-beginning of' rills year's Senior
Citizen's Week The theme this
‘,..ear is to emphasize the
capacity to enjoy life at any age
and is suitably named', "We're
living every minute -of it."
Some of the objectives of the
weekare to praise those Senior
•Citizens who are actively in-
volved in community'activities
and reassure them of their im-
pOrtance to the community': .to
courage elderly people to re -
e amine themselves with
re ards to -their ,activities; and
to attempt tti change the
ste eotype conception many
peo le in the cornmunity have
of s nior citizens.
T e —Huron' County Health
Unit plans to incorporate the
objectives of Senior Citizen's
Week into a general health Sur-
veillance of' the elderly
residents of Goderich and
Huron Couno,... Clinics for the
older people have not always
been successful in the pat but
the Health Unit feels that a
more personal approach could
bring the desired results. The
nurses participating in the
clinic .are sympathetic to the
problems of the elderly and are
.willing to isten.to them and of-
fer suggestions .to the smallest
and must insignificant problem
that they may have. This type,
(?f informal meeting by the •twii
factions may bring about -the
more intimate discussion of
Problems that -are plag-ping the
senior citizens and through this
method the Health .Unit could
handle their job much easier.
Sore of the problems .en-
countered by the Health Unit
are people who''are extremely
• lonely and 'as a result will not
eat properly simply because
they cannot be bothered
cooking. 'Others lack proper,
nutrition because of physical
problems that do not allow
them to cook properly.
Some suggestions to counter
these problems are the Meals
on Wheels program being in-
trocluced •So morti Senior
Citizens. Introducing more of
the elderly to one another in an
:effort to open friendships is
another step that Would enable
people' to. help , one another
-while helping themselves,
.Special visits are planned ,hy
the Health Unit to the elderly..
Thesespot checks will 4e for
chi, health Of the old 'and to
lonel'v irion effort to
keep their situation from
deteriorating. Information on'
budgets, wills, pensions and
physical fitness will be offered
the elderly .by professional
people working in Conjunction
with the Health Unit. •
It• is hoped that overall par-
ticipation in this year's Senior
Citizen's 'Week willII-lake it a
worthwhile' and learning ex-
perience for both the young,and
the old alike..
