To meet local needs
opsumers Association starts Go
The, Consumers' Assooiation
of Canada (CAC) last Thur-
sday established a local com-
mittee to serve the 'Goderich -
area.
. During a rneet,ing, at
Goderich District Collegiate In-
stitute, three local women,
Isobel MacDonald, joan.Black
"and Laurie Head, volunteered
to head a CAC eoinrpittee in
Goderich.
The local committee will
work with both the national
and provincial'• CAC
organizations.,
In an information pamphlet,
CAC describes itself as""an in-
formed voice in consumer afa
fairs". .
CAC maintains that it is "a
two-way channel of com-
munic'`ation .between consumers,
retailers, manufacturers,
agriculture And government".
Prior to establishment of the
local com'mitt'ee.: three CAC
organizers, Barbara Robinson,
Guelph, Pauline Reid, London,
and Helen Carter, London,
held an "open discussion of the
Association's aims ,and
achievements. '
Mrs. Robinson stressed the
need for a local committee in
this area.
'This part of the province
should be represented when
CAC does surveys to tend con-
sumer views 'about what
federal, provincial and local
governments ,,should be
legislating, = she said.,
CAC tried in vain to organize
a committee here about one
month ago, Too few .people at -

meeting_
A prime concern ,of th;e 15
people who attended last Thur-
'sday's meeting was school 'bus'.-
safety.'
Some• persons noted a report
on a national news program
revealing' buses as being unsafe
when involved in collisions.
Other persons said truing to.
control children's 'behaviour on
a bus is a problem, Bus drivers
shouldn't be expected to con-
trol their vehicles and -the
children,.
CAC has urged improved.
school bus safe for years.
A local concern such as the •
school' bus. regulations could
become t' project for the new
committee.
Committees across the
province work -to solve local
problems as well as provincial
and national ones.
The more local committees
there% are, the more effective
CAC is, Mrs. Robinson said,
Nutrition is a new field the
association will put ,finder its
microscope.
One CAC committee suc-
seededin having its local
school „ board• remove a. soft
drink vending machine from a'
high school. ,e •
The result was fewer. Cavities
among students, Mrs.'R,obinson
`said:

Innaddition to its own work,
CAC c'c5operates with other
organizations such as Pollution
Probe and recycling centres,
Mrs. Robinson saki.
The topics discussed showed
the many interests CAC has.
~Allprojects' are aimed .at
protecting 'consumers.
The asspciation lists its
achievements '-in consumer
protection.
Its actions sparked establish-
ment of a federal department of
consumer and corporate affairs.
Legislation stemming .from
the 'department includes the
.Textile. Labelling,' Act, the
-Hazardus Products Act, and.
the Packaging and Labelling '
Act.
CAC has prorpOed-.national
standards, achieving them for'
children's clothes, children's
car seats and hearing aid com-
ponents,
Its efforts made fibre content

cluding annual interest rates
and total amounts payable.

dates because of Association
actions.

CAC pressures.
