Teri - little boys and even, litti'e girls - also ;turns to thoughts ,M of riding his .or her bicycle on busy • rhunicripal ,streets. The town's safety officer, Police Con- stable Tom Jarczak ' is interested ' in bicycle safety, of course. He yisits the, schools on a somewhat. regular basis to talk about all'aspects, of safety but he admits that his busy agendajust does not include enough tfine to actually work with the. Children as he would prefer. That's. too bad. Every year, cyclists in' this town and most others get -younger, • • Motorists get more . hurried and in- creasingly frustrated. 'Streets get busier. Hazards guild up. A Safe Bicycling Course is. pffere'i through the Canada Safety Council. It is a six -hour program of instruction to, develop the knowledge, skills and, at- titudes necessary'for safe bicycling. It is designed by the Canada Safety Council as a co=operative effort for educators, t organized groups and traffic officers in charge of . safety education in the schools. ' It is an excellent project for sponsorhl at the community, level J..-...... .. -p n. J. ..... .tea . • .. , The ,course is to be given in elernen tary schools as an option during regular class hours or as an e-tra=cu rii cular ac-, \ tivity - =after crass pr on' Saturday mor - x e' nings.. I'tis 'aimed at Grade 116 Grade:6 studentsand the actiyities 'and methods of teaching were selected for an adap- ted to two age groups - 6 to 9; 10 to 113, It is. Made of 29 sections - 12 theory and 17 practice. The course. ends with a Roadeo and the presen- ' tation of certificates and prizes. The CSC says its is especially designed to help young .bicycle riders acquire the , k.rnowledge and skills necessary to survive in modern traffic as well as to develop positive attitudes which will reflect later int the youngster's performance at the wheel ,of a motor vehicle. Ifithis'Safe Bicycling Course could be brought`to Goderich under the auspices of some service club or perhaps even Town Council's Fire, Traffic and Safety Division, it 'would provide an excellent •, opportunity t6 establish a sound and ef- ficient .procedure for testing, registering and licensing bicycles and to determine a minimum age at which young cyclist's may safe' ake their vehic'Ies onto public thoroughfares, for their own ,.., •Srotection as well as that of motorists and pedestrians. ` , The .' information on the course is available fromi he Canada Safety Coun- cil, oun- ci1, 30 Driveway, Ottawa, K2P 1 C9. Williams, that if any attemptwas made to pay 'out the appropriation ,an injunction would be ap- plied for. The council hasn't decided whether" it. will sit on the ragged 'edge of the injurfe- tjon or carry a ,lunch• basket and a tent on Parliament Hilh The Roentgtn rays were called into requisition to deter mine the location of the bullet in the leg of Donal McGillicuddy, who accidentally shot himself, last week. A skiagraph was taken and the bullet 'was found at an entirely. different ,location than was ex- Tected. It had turned in its course and travelled• upwards and must have travelled at least ten inches. To extract it an incision is required con the exact opposite side of the. Ivpund and the doctor may allow it to remain. The little fellow is getting along as well as can be expected. , The refitting of the 'fishing fleet is almost completed and the boats will`Iie feady to move out as•soon as the ice goes The ice is now rapidly disappearing. Lighthouse keeper Campbell 'has"eversifi ng in readiness for the. display of wind. signals. A' boat' has been put into cam- , mission' for the. Government in- spector of dredging. Out of compliments to the Minister of Public Works the little craft •has beerf christened "Israel Tarte" and wiliin'g hands have inscribed, the name on the side or the little craft. Last Thursday evening a party of about fifteen ,young .people drove out to CAS, Naf- 'tel's farm on Bayfield Road, where they sprint a most en- joyable time' making maple sugar. After an evening of fun they returned to town in the "Wee sma' hours." PEAR EDI1TOR Let's sell Huron It 'appears that Huron County is 'to have a Tourist and Business Association.,That's a step in the right direction anit is to, be hoped that Goderich and area residents will support this organization inawhatever manner is Most helpful. Huron County maybe an agricultural leader in the province but when. it.comes tai luring the tourist, and holing 'his in- terest, Huron citizens are missing "the mark. . It makes one wonder if+luron 'Cbuntir people 'reall'y think of the' tourist °business . as a viableand important source of income. For years farming ,has been of prime concern .in this ,county yet in recent years it has become more and more apparent that Huron°,Ctounty has a•" - great deaf to offer to persons who are -looking for a' quiet and scenic spot in which ,to vacation. • The phenomenal increase in the num- .ber of camping sites in- the Goderich vicinity attests to the fact that people are on the move in the summer time. What are the county merchants .doing .to cash in on this `transient source of extra come? What are Huron's businessmen and industrialists doing ' to make the county attractive and to encourage visitors to think,• of this county as something mora .than a pretty place to drive through? • Spence Cummings, Huron County development officer, is predicting a record number Of -tourists this year for the Lake Huron communities in par- ticular, the county in geheral. Under his direction and by his enthusiasm, the initial meeting .to create a Tourist and Business .gssociation has been held. Now,onApril 23 ,at 8 p,m. at the Hully Gully Recreation Centre, the election of officers to get the Association underway, will be held, Why don't you plan to at- tend? Why don't you get involved in'this Opportunity to sell Huron County and a wonderful way of life?. Thank ..von Dear- Editor: The Daily News was good 'last year.
