veterans of, Vimy.
Branch pl•esident Robert
Chapman, who was chairman
of the meeting; introduced the
head table guests 'which in-
cluded Comrade Mrs. Howard
Carroll, Honorary treasurer of
the Ladies Legion Auxiliary of',
the Provincial Command;
Comrade Rose Marie `
Lassaline, president of 'Legion '
Branch 109 Ladies Auxiliary;
Legion DistrictCommanderF.
Tilker; and Zone. Commander
Harold Chambers.
The guest speaker `-was
Comrade ,Ellwood Daly, a
veteran of Veteran" Affairs in
London. He was introduced by
Legion First vice-president E.
Tonks.
Comrade Daly outlined the
extreme difficulties faced by the
Canadian Corps of that snowy
Easter Monday in 1917 when a
well-planned attack finally led
to the capture of Vimy Ridge, a -
key position on the western
r -
° front.,
The guest speaker stated that
today this ridge it; the site of a
beautiful monument erected by,
f ..
el
the Government of Canada in
memory- of the thousands of
Canadians whot t their -lives -
during -World War` 1.
For those veterans who
returned to civilian. life, the
government establishedthe
Departmeht of Veterans' Af-
fairs, to look after the
rehabilitation, medical care
and social welfare of the
veterans.
In his concluding remarks
Comrade Daly stated that the
Legion, which is a democratic
non-political organization
where service above self is
practiced, must continue to
vigorously promote the welfare
of the veteran and the com-
munity.
Zone Commander Chambers
presented life meinberships to
the Branch Padre G.L. Royal
and Bert Munday; a veteran of
World War 1. He also presen-
ted a '25 -year pin to Comrade
Albert Shore, a member of
Branch 109.

President Chapman also ex --
pressed the. thanks .,of the
branch to the ladies of the
Legion ,Auxiliary who catered
for the banquet.
