Muggeridge spoke out strongly against abortion ands stated that in his : view, the introduce, ticn of legalized abortion only serves to `put the thought of resorting to an -abortion into the mind of a pregnant woman. Mr, Muggeridge said that legalizing abortion does not eliminate illegal abortions. "Dowe want,,scientific minds to control the two points in our lives, 'life and death?" he asked, referring, ,to his 'belief that, euthanasia follows closely- on the heels of legalized abor- tion. d Mr, Muggeridge spoke about the heart transplants' perfor- med in South ' Africa by Dr. Christian Barnard. Through' this, Mr. Muggeridge said, people became aware of the shortage of "spare parts''- for such surgery._ • Mr. JsMuggeridge said he asked Dr. Barnard why he thought the first heart tran- splant had taken place in South Africa. Was it because of the. skill of the doctors 'and the specialized equipment .there? Or was the experiment perfor- med in a place where, life is devalued? . According to Mr. Muggeridge, where moral valuesare wrong, there is soon another wrong and life becomes valueless. Fie charged that the media is generally on the' side of abor- titf`n and presents a world of fantasy. Mr. Muggeridge said that hunger and what is .termed overpopulation could be han- dled is therewas more generosity in the hearts of men. H;e spoke about Mother Theresa entitled "Something Beautiful for God"., Mother Theresa who lives in Calcutta, picks babies out of dustbins and cares for them. She also. helps the old and dying. "What can we do about hunger ' concluded. "Maintaining a standard Qf living is essential to us. The more we produce, the., r°nore we consume. Toa•, sav there is famine in Africa because of the, „number of people there is insanity. The, crisis Qf shortage of food is the. abandonment of Western man of the basics of faith and ethics of his religion. M. Muggeridge called Women's- Lib "a- sinister and, unhappy development of our ' times". .He said women are reluctant to have babies .and have "alYdicated this privilege and •abdicated .their purpose - the. fatally, the dignity and the - glory" - Tk speaker was invited by the London Right ,to I,ife and suitably than'ke'd by Dr. Barry deVeber, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, UWO and the Lon,- India onIndia it will not mean the other ---1 don Right.to Life president. half will he led." , "T,his is' a deliberate avoi lance of the actual question," Mr. Mt1'ggeridge and overpopulation?" asked Mr. Muggeridge' ''There has to be a way of looking -at life. These Tare not, separaUe problems. Men are tfollowing false purposes and are attrac- ted to material things. There are not too many people in In- dia but too little generosity in the hearts of men." "There is a means to produce food- through man's ingenuity, but they have lost faith in.God, in His destine," said Mr. Muggeridge,"In the '20th Cen- tury, ,with new discoveries and sending men to the moon, man is .sitting snivelling. there are too many people.': "If you kill half the unborn babies in Canada, ,,,it will not mean the people in India will be fed," said Mr. Muggeridge. Many parents are' unable to see their children as individual human beings and too often the' phrase, "Oh, they're just children", covers up a chance to see a child as such. For example, have you ever thought of the' right you had to go up tto a .child and suddenly turn into a gushing fountain of sentiment in extolling ihre 'child's cuteness? You would not expect this of another person who came up to you for the first time .and ap- proached you in such a manner. Your reaction would' probably be anger and embarrassment.°At child feels. the same way.
