* Mention the Huron County

°people, if they know about it at
all, think of a service which
may provide ;a home maker,

weeks if you are just out of

It is this image 9f Home Care
that Betty 'Cardno of Seaforth,
the program's director, is trying
to set straight.
Home making is just one' of
rhe services that the county
Home Care program offers,
Mrs'. Cardno says. Anyone
who gets help from a • home
maker (limited to 80 hours),
must also need' at least one of
the professional services that
Home Care offers ---a
physiotherapist, occupational
therapist or VO,N: nurse.

n One of the 342 people who
went $•tome Care patients so far
this year is (their year runs
from April to March), a woman
'who had varicose ulcers but did
not want to go into hospital..1
She asked her doctor about the
possibility of. Home Care, the
doctor refwed her to Mrs., Car-
dno 'and the woman was•
treated at home under the
program through ' VON visits
and part-time. help from a
home maker. •
-We ,have to look at what
goals the doctor and the patient
have ---if rehabilitation goals
are there, the program can be
of help". When accepting -a
,person into the Home Care
program, Mrs. Cardno • says,
The Horne Care program helps
rehabilitate through two" ser-
vices, physio and occupational
therapy. An occupational
therapist is ori loan ' to , the
program from the Goderich
Psychiatric Hospital for one
day a week; A physio therapist
works for Home Care for half.,
week, 'and at Seaforth • Com-
munity Hospital for the rest of
the 'week, .

PRIVATE HOMEMAKERS
For situations like this, or for
oldage pensioners who need
long term help while getting
over anllness but clo not want
to go 90 a nursing home',
memakers ' can be hired
phorivately. If the
patient can't
j
afford to pay , a homemaker, in
some cases, the provincial
social services department will
pay. .
There is a great need in the
couanty for homemakers and
companions, mainly for elderly
people who want to stay in
their•homes. "Mrs. Cardno's of-
fice will try to put people 'who
are available for work as
privately paid homemakers, in
Fr'
touch with .people who need
either live-in or part-time
homemaking assistance.
