Loe 1 members of Parliament
were warned recently that`
quick action .must be taken or
there will be' a real 'crisis in the
Milk 'industry in Ontario.
The warnings came from
Jack Armstrong. of• Auburn
chairman of the. Huron County
Milk Committee and Doug
Fraser, Walton, representing'
the county's cream producers
and was delivered at the an-
nual Members of Parliament
dinner sponsored by the Huron
County Federationof
agriculture.
Rohert McKinley, MP for'
Huron, Jack Riddel,, MPP for
Huron. and Murray Gaunt,
MPP for Huron -Bruce were
• present to hear more than a
dozen briefs from county farm
organizations.
Mr, Armstrong told Ahem.
that the number of milk
producers ,in Ontario last year
dropped by eight per cent and
in Quebec the reduction was'10
per cent. He said long hoyrs
and rising costs were driving
dairy farmers into cash crop-
ping and other more attractive
forms of. agriculture. •He called
• for a five.-ydear program in
dairying which -would be an-
• nqunged in advance and up-
dated' annually. ' He said far-
mers needed an immediate in-
crease of $2per hundredweight
in the price of industrial milk.
Mr. McKinley commented
that the long-term dairy' policy
'was • something he had pushed
for years:. Mr._ Riddell said he.
telt tE changes were Weeded
' but" . thought the trend away
from the dairy farm would Con-
tinue because farmers could see
how much more they could get
for less work- in other fields:
Jack Stafford • of Wroxeter
replied that ,at least - a anew
,policy might keep dairy farrhers
in the business where cash
cropping waa not .possible
. Mr. Armstrong warned that
if milk production isn't soon• in-
creased, "I don't know how
much .Conger some of the small
processing • plants. will stay in
businss": Be said -many of
these , i are . working 'at h'alf-
' , throttle• now. •
Mr: k -raser reminded the
Members that if the plants
close, urban areas will be hurt
as well. ' He told ' of one'
processing :plant that had
closect with a lay-off . of eight,
. men last suTmer. Of these he,
said, one was on a Manpower
retraining • program and the
other seven were—Still .unem-
ployed: Y•
Mr, Riddell wondered if it
would be possible to reactivate
• these plants that have closed if
milk' production rises again.
Mr, Gaunt asked Mr. Arm-.
strong . if he had figures for the
decline in Huron County -milk
producers. Mr. Armstrong told'
him that the, northern part of
the county hasn't dropped as
much as some other parts,' but
the average was about the

same • as the rest of, the
4, province. He said that since
• 1966 the number of producers
, inthe county has dropped from
1400 to 850:—•

according to club organizers in,
d•idations are that 'the upcoming
year will be- the best ever. Club
membership, they note, has *•
doul.ed in the past four years
•and as a result it is 'possible to
"offer''rnore programs than ever •
before.
Although membership is
strong the organizers explain
they are pushing, for more
"melfibers this year in an effort
to keepthe 441organization
growing in the •''Pounty.
A project was begun two
years ago aimed at helping to
introduce new, 'people into the
4-H. program. This waastone by
asking club leaders and mem-
bers to send the names and ac-
dresses of° young people they
thought might beinterested" in
joining 4-H..trn' the Department
of Agriculture office at Clinton.
' During the past - two years,
however, the project, has
received very little support. ,.
Diming "19744.the, organization
is being encouraged to .put new '
effort .'into 'the scheme. The
orgarizets are, asking each and
every inember to write down
- : the names arid address of three
friends who are not involved in
the 4-H program and send
them • to the Department of
Agriculture Office by February
25. '
it is hoped that such an ef-
fort will :'bring new life to
various' County programs
orgao ked' by 4.14.
