The Board will continue to pay tuition fees for Brenda and Murray Van Veen to complete their education at Listgwel District Secondary School, should they choose to continue their education at thatschool, but the Board will refuse to pay tuition fees for any other mem- ber of the family or any other student resident at L`o"t 24 Con: 14 who would enrol in a secon- dary school year 1973-74, unless , covered by any agreement between this Board and the Perth County Board of Education. (Seaforth High School Bus serves this area). The Board approved the field trip from Exeter Public School to the Niagara area in late May, 1973. The new school year policy was endorsed for 1973-74 as follows: November 21 --local (by school) Professional Develop- ment Day; February 18, 1974, school holiday (one day) to replace Easter Monday; March 18-22, 1974, mid -winter break as at present time; April 30, 1974--county-wide professional Development Day; May 31, 1974 --Professional Activity Day for elementary schools and schools for the trainable retar- ded; June 27-28, 1974 -- Professional Activity Days for elementary schools and schools for trainable retarded; June 17- 28, 1974 --Professional Activity Days for secondary schools, in- cluding' final supplemental examinations; and in accor- dance with Ministry of Education memorandum that May 25, June 26°and June' 29 of 77'''—a"e.S.lgn'rirett.-•_. "professional activity days" for the' Board's Elementary Schools and Schools 'for the trainable retarded. The Board will subsidize- to the extent of $25 each, two Students from South Hun District High School to attInd for one week the Central On- tario Wrestling School at the University of Guelph during the summer of 1973. The Board approved the ratio of secretarial assistance in the Huron County Secondary Schools be one secretary for each two hundred students or more commencing September 1, 1973. Trustee John Henderson of RR 5, Seaforth, made a motion that the ratio be left at 230 students but there° was no seconder_ for his amendment.. He suggested .that much secretarial time was wasted in handling absentee notes from students, some who are 18 and 19, men and women. It was in- dicated the change in ratio would mean one additional secretary. Concerning the Bruce Scott Scholarships at the Seaforth District High School, approval was given the recommendation that legal proceedings be in- stituted for variation of the trusts under the will of the late Bruce Scott. The will stipulated that each year the first $500 scholarship must go to a student at the University of Toronto. D.J. Cochrane, Director of Education, reported -that the last few years students from Seaforth have not been going to Toronto and thus this amount of money was put in a trust fund which now has reached a total of $12,000. It is recommended that this money be put, back in the, trust fund and only the total interest from the combined funds be divided equally among ,the students from the Seaforth District High • School who attend a university (to a maximum of $500 per, student). The Board will make ap- plication to the Ontario Ministry of Education for ap- proval of a project by Professor James Scott of Seaforth to up- date the history of Huron County under the Experience '73" plan of the Provincial Government folr grants to students made available through the Ministry of Education. The project is designed to up- date the history of Huron County from 1900 to 1975. The history of the first 75 years of Huron County was documented and made. available in a book commissioned by the Huron County Council --"The Set- tlement of Huron County" by James Scott (Ryerson, 1966). Headed by Robert Mackay, Dean of Law at the University of" Western Ontario, the Board awarded the 12,000 members of Local 1000 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees wage and salary increases of 22 percent over three years. The increases to all but a handful of employees will be a retroactive increase of eight percent in the first year ended March 31, 1973; and seven per- cent in each of the years ending March 31, 1974 and March 31, 1975. In addition, the award provides for a c,ost of living ad- justment in the contract's second and third years so that every three percent change in the Consumer Price Index will result in a three percent wage increase or. decrease.. The seven percent increases in 1973 and 1974 include a 1.5 percent prepayment of this cost of living factor. Other changes to the expired contract include the addition of an .eleventh statuatory holiday and the advancement of the three-week vacation en- titlement.
