Club requests grant
The Goderich Figure Skating
Club has requested a grant of
$1,000 from the Recreation
Board.
Grant Ellison representing
the Club stated that their
deficit for this season amounts
to $528. and they would like a
grant of $500 to clear this up.
They would also like an ad-
ditional grant of $500 to cover
their initial operating costs for
the 7:3-74 season, thus bringing

with racing
According to the Toronto
Star and Contemporary News
Service, former .Huron MPP
Charlie MacNaughton will
become Chairman of the On-
tario Racing Commission next
week.
Mr. MacNaughton resigned
his post as Ontario- Treasurer
last January and stepped down
from his seat in the legislature
10 e with his family in Exeter.
The seat was subsequently
taken by Liberal Jack Riddell
in the March 15 by-election.
An appointment becomes
'necessary as the term of
Brigadier F.C. Wallace, the
present, chairman, expires at
the end of March.
Contacted at his home in
Exeter on Tuesday, Mr.
MacNaughton said he knew
nothing about the appointment
and would offer no further
comment. He said that he had
not heard the news reports.
. Should Mr. MacNaughton
receive and accept the appoint-
ment, he will face many tough
tasks, including recent hearings
the ORC is conducting into
race, fixing charges at Windsor
Raceway, and the problem of
off-track betting.
The job is reported to be
worth between $30,000 and
$40,000 a year.

The fifth meting of the
Taylors Corners 4-H club was
held in the Goderith Township
area school at Holmesville` on
March' 22.
Mrs. Westbrook demon-
strated how to sew a set in

Mrs. Rodges demonstrated,a

Each girl practised the tailor's

the total amount . of the
requested grant to $1,000.
- According to Mr. Ellison, the.
reason for this request is that
the costs of their professional
instructors may- go up as high
as 14 percent next year. Also,
there will he a $1. increase in
the registration • fee this tear
which will -go to the Canadian
Figure Skating Association.
Last year the grant was $400
but as the Club does not want
to increase registration fees this
original grant would apparen-
tly not be enough to cover costs.
Mr. Ellison also stated that
there would be some fund
raising project next year as
usual but they fell- down on
them this , year. It was also
disclosed • that the skating club
had large fee increases last
year.
The decision on the grant is
pending- as the Recreation
Board feels .that the skating
organization 'As well as other
orgairizations should en-
deavour to raise more Money
themselves and depend less on
grants.
Recreation Director Mike
Dymond intends to discuss
fund raising possibilities- with

said there are usually only
three or four tender prices to be
considered.
Engineer Burns Ross who
was present at the meeting
along with a packed gallery of
ratepayers and other interested
persons, told council the tender,
price was about eight percent
above the estimated .cost o1'
$90,000 for the work. However,
Ross said, the price was most
competitive and council agreed
that the project should go
ahead as scheduled without
any deletions to keep the
project within the estimate. ,
While Ross could not say
when work would start, he said
completion- date has been set
for the end of June.
Ross also reminded council
that land developers at the end
of Warren Street are .paying a
considerable portion of the cost
of the Warren Street Storm
Sewer because they recognize
that development land should
not expect the cost of (Vvelop-
ment to come from general
•
municipal funds.
Deputy -reeve Stan Profit
asked the engineer if the town
had not set a precedent by put-
ting the South Storm Sewer.,un-

der The Drainage Act. He won-
dered how the town could
now propose to pay for the bulk
of the Warren Street Storm
Sewer from the general levy.
Ross told Profit that the
Warren Street Storm Sewer,is a
direct benefit to the streets of
Goderich and the built-up sec-
tion ot°' the municipality. He
said the South .Storm Sewer
passes through raw develop-
ment land which will benefit
primarily those persons , who
propose to develop the southern
portion of the town, below Ben-
nett Street.
Ross said that one house, one
lot residences in the area to be
serviced by ,the youth Storm
Sewer will not have to pay
anything toward the South
Storm Sewer. He said the firm
of Todgham and Case 'has been
instructed•to revise assessments
to one house, one lot residences
so that no one is assessed more
than $25..It is then legal for the
municipality to pick up the tab
for these homeowners.
