I've spent 19 years studiously avoiding an\ -thing remotely connected with medicine. I know all about the public irnage of "those lousy rich doctors.'" This past vear my father has been letting me in on his world. Suddenly i realized that when he leaves the house in the middle of a family crisis; it's because somebody needs him worse than we do. I've decided to study science because now I know I'll never be happy unless I give medicine a try. Yes. I am aware that the training means eight years and \,: it's incredibly expensive. I realize a career in medicine is a commitment to long hours and hard work. My- dad's office ex- Lenses- are staggering. The paperwork is tedious. He says malpractice suits are a terrific hazard. But medicine means devoting your -life to keeping people fun - I t iuna 1, easing paih, patching up broken bodies and -trying to make them usable again. What hotter w -ay to spend one's life?
