With the Goderich Sailors

T Ilng'..:gai.nt .u.wath:...many
players who have made a name
for themselves over the years,
Goderich may once again look
like a HOCKEY TOWN.
There have been more great
hockey players come out of
Goderich than any other small
town — that I can think of,
anyway.
Recently with hockey games
of the past and players of, well
not SO long ago, being discussed
an interesting confession turned
up.
One old die hard recalled
"helping" one of the players win
a to
- star h for the most goals of the
seasdan,
Now. thisgoes back to the
Junior B's and those were ex-
citing games to remember.
As the tale goes: We 'were
playing in Stratford this nite
and in the dressing room before
the game, the coach, Jack
vans, was giving the boys a
pep talk before they roared, out
onto the ice.
Now we want ,to win this
game, but Goderich likes to
have a name they can brag
about so, let's help Ken win top
scorers spot." I believe he was
only one goal ahead of a
Waterloo runner yip and Ken
Thompson was a great digger
and a fine hockey player. (Good
looking, too — that's ME
'talking):
Well, I was asked to attend
,the goal judges light, a
dangerous spot in those days —
no protection of any kind.
Anyway, the first puck -Ken
got by the goalie didn't quite
make it, but it was so exciting I
flashed the goal light — and
then wouldn't back down!
,The puck had gone behind the
goalie but he couldn't tell
whether it had bounced. back to
its spot just outside the line or •
not.
Everyone pounced on me,

The poor goalie couldn't be
sure ---- neither could any one
else, so they let it ride."
I broke into the tale with
"Why would you ever do a thing
like that?" "Well, I thought it
might be the only one we'd get
that nite and I wanted to help
Ken." (This was unknown to
Ken!)

ter Association
1st meeting
On Wed-nesdayy November1x5,
a meeting was held in Goderich
for the purpose of forming ,a
Huron County Minor Soccer
Association.
The purpose was fulfilled atd
an Association was formed.
Eleven people were in atten-
dance,'
dance, representing a few other
areas outside of Goderich, but'
not the wide representation that
was hoped for.
Three executive positions
were filled, and, others are
required, but again further
are being held .-aver until- a
greater representation is
realized at a future meeting.
Various approaches to other
areas of the county are being
planned to attract a greater in-
terest at a subsequent meeting.
,As well,' a comrnittment will be
requested in terms of the num-
' ber of teams from the county
that could become a part of the
association.
A limited league did function
in Goderich, excluding the est
p
leagues .un
ague functioned in other
parts of the county.
Bringing these small leagues
into one association; becoming a
mernher of the provincial body
can increase participation in
.minor soccer, improve the
quality of the game' locally,
provide a training ground for
the `aspiring, professional and
the foundation for top senior
• _ teams -- not to mention filling
an obvious and expressed need.
There will be another meeting
to elect other needed officers,
nnminntinn4 fn" th•;•• rncrtinn n season, and no doubt similar and discuss the association in
general. The' date of that,
nristua n Farmers pia
meeting is Wednesday, Decem-
