Wasted in the history of Huron
County
"The unit already housed by
the Children' S Aid. Society could'
be maintained as exists by the
County. for a period of five
"Years. At the end of'that time: if
required this building 'too could
be converted to :cultural uses.
"A board of management be
set up appointed by Town coun-
cil containing six members (four
interested persons 'from the com-
munity and two .councillors with

certain other proportions of
material used: This project
should fall under these
qualifications. However the
deadline for application is
December 31, 1972.
"For approximately $35,000
we could do the necessary im-
provements to have the building
ready for the summer of 1973.
"It would appear that no

great structural c hange.will be
necessa and' the major cost
will be labour to improve the,
drab appearance,of the interior.
A major portion of the cost "
would be covered by the above
grant. The balance of costs
could corm from local grants
budgeted in 1973 and from
donations.
"With proper utilization and
management. of the project,
within three years, once displays
and uses have been attained. I
feel that this could be 'a self sup-
` t ting - attraction °and auld
not be a financial burden on the

"If council would support this
motion the procedural steps
would be as follows:

1. To set" up a committee to
approach County Council to
work out at agreement suit ble--

"2 If successful wit :dr --
County,
E .e,. nCounty, Council then would set
up board of management.
"3. The;.card of management
would then put, forth their
proposals with more accurate
costs, for the approval of coup-
cil.
Council would then in-
stigate the application under the
Local Initiative Program."
Maclean adds color
to a small Town
The following is an article which appeared in Contact, the of-
ficial -publication of the jounalism class at Conestoga College at
Kitchener. Written by 'a well-known' Goderich youth, Michael
Gregg of last summer's "Folks", the item features another well-
known Goderich person, John Maclean.
.
_Ely_ Michael ,Gregg
The pop bottle cartons stuffed
between his shirt and his large
belly are the only protection
from the elements that John
Maclean has, He wears , the
same. suit of clothes all year .
around; a white nylon shirt;
grey flannel pants and a pair of,
blue beach thongs.
. It is not uncommon to be
stopped by this bearded
monolith on the ''Square of
Goderich, Ontario, and asked
the question: "Is there anything
I can sell you today?"
John makes a living selling
'assorted bric-a-brac and collec-
ting discarded soft drinks.
Everyone knows Jbhn and
very few people have. ever had a
grievance against him.
Physically John is very con-
spicuous. He is about 70 years
old, with shoulder -length silver
hair and a matching beard and
has .a good 250 pounds of an
average size frame. He wears
silver choke chain around the
top of his head to' keep the hair
from his eyes.
Future' plans
continued from page 1
will be prepared for .registered
plans on undeveloped land and
other pertinent areas. Under
Section 29 of the Planning Act,
Section 3, a municipal council is
permitted to pass a deeming
bylaw on a registered plan of
subdivision which has been in
existence eight years or longer.
In, effect, the deeming. bylaw
would remove part or all of the
registered plan of subdivision
and would return the plan to its
former status before it was sub-
divided.
John r has a fetish --about __
• toenails as' well `as fingernails; .
not one of 4hese nails is • less
ha,n one and one half ,inches
long.
John is a great storyteller and
will strike up a conversation on
the spur of the moment with a
complete stranger on any sub-
ject the stranger would like to
talk about. Of course once the
stranger, has chosen his topic,
the destiny of the whole exercise
is beyond his control. John has
an anecdote for every subject
you would care to mention.
Most of his . stories are really
essays in skepticism which
exhibit his distrust in human
nature on the world scale. His
personality is not at all reflec-
tive of his attitude and is con-
sistent with his inconsistency.
John has not always relied on
pop bottles for a source of in-
come. He at one time drove a
Harley-Davidson Electra -Glide
for a living. Heran a taxi ser-
vice charging 25c for a ride
anywhere in town.
Another source of. income for
John is a rack and cue; he is
probably the best pool player in
Goderich but will never play for
more than 25c a frame.
John is basically nocturnal
and is seldom seen before seven
o'clock when he makes his first',
tour of the Square. During the '
course of the evening, three or
four tours reap a harvest of bot-
tles left on the curb by motorists
for him.
John has a simple lifestyle
which he seems to enjoy the ut-
most. It is this lifestyle which
separates him from the dull
people of Goderich. It is people
like John who add colour to a
small town and produce a break
in a tedious modern society such
as ours.
