Salvation Army. gets
new lender for group
The Salvation Ariny 'opened
fire" in Goderich in 1885 With
_. tk1e,.A1'riysil_ of Mayr Rowen,
Now, 87 years lat4r, two new
leaders of the Salvation Army
have arrived in Goderich. They
are Captain and Mrs. Dan
Connor, from Scarborough. In
Goderich for a month now, these
two dedicated people have been
with this religious organization
for much of their lives,
Darleen Connor, fresh out of
college, joined in leadership of
the Salvatiof Army, ,,,serving in
many towns; . First . she was
st4i4oned in Ingersoll, then
Dundas, and later in Tweed.
Dan Connor was in "the'
printing business before he
joined 'the Salvation Army
where they stationed him in
Luner burg, Nova Scotia. He
hails from Windsor originally,
and Mrs. Connor was born in
Vancouver, B.C.
After their marriage they were
stationed -in Nap`anee, Birchcliff,
Scarborough, and now here.
Within the last -few years Mrs.
Connor has been busy raising
her children, Christopher, 21/2
years old, and Stephen, 16
`months.
Previous totheir arrival in
Goderich Captain Bill McCune
was head of the Salvation
Army.
The friendly couple, radiating
a warmth towards humanity,
say they are just starting to
recognize faces in town, and
hope soon to be familiar with
everyone here.
Their blonde -haired boys are
happy, perceptive children.
Christopher, the oldest is more
'serious and quiet than. his little
brother Stephen, who Mrs,
Connor says won't stay in one
place for longer " than a few
seconds ata time.
The Connors have the long
history of the Salvation Army to
beck them up in their _ new
home. The citadel, built by
Major Row'en in' 1885 held out
until 1929 when it Oyes
destroyed by fire.
Then in September of 1930
the building, after renovations,
was re -opened under the
,comma'hd of Ensign 'Mary
Thompson.
This building served until
December, 1962, when, the
present building was opened by
Commissioner Wycliffe Booth,
grandson of . the founder of the
Salvation Army. Captain Alice.
Bailey was the officer in charge_
at this tine.
In 1964 it was a ' happy
occasion for local salvationists,
under the 'command of ,Captain
Roy Wombold to burn .the.
mortgage on the new building.
The' then Divisional'
Commander, Colonel John
Nelson, took part ' in • this
ceremony.
With the, aid of people like
Captain and Mrs. Connor, the
Salvation Army in Goderich, 87
years old, will live past its first
century and through centuries to
come.
