Goderich boasted a flock of
smallindustries sixty -odd years
ago,.., all but one gone now, but
their total in employment -and
investment would not compare
with that , of Domtar and
Dominion Road Machinery in
1972•
A map of the town, "compiled
and drawn by J. Ades Fowler,
C.E. published by Vanatter and
Robertson of The Signal •and
dated I909, was picked up at an '
auction , by, Jack „Shaw, London,
and brought to V.E. Elliott here
on Monday.
South of the Grand Trunk
"depot," this map shows, there
were the Kensington Furniture
factory, Wheel Rigs factory,
Doty Boiler Works. and
Ransford Salt works (on the site
of Domtar evaporator plant.)
On -East Street at -Cambria road,
the "bicycle works" and "organ
works" confronted each other.
Mill Street, the road to Piper's
Dam, was also the road to "mill,
quarry, etc.". North of the old
road to Saltford bridge was
"distillery flats," indication of
another departed industry.
Saltford had one in "McEwan
salt works."
There was an apple
evaporator on Brute Street east
of Cambria Road, and that
building still stands, but the
"rink" on West Street at.
Waterloo , is long gone.
"Ransford's Grove,". north of
the Huron, Road at the, CN"
tracks has been shorn of' most of
the trees indicated in the pna.p. A
road is shown 'running down the
hill from' the north end of
Victoria Street : curving, back
apparently to the present site of
Maitland Golf and Country
Club, and reaching an arn'r of
the river:
In 1909, the harbor area
'contained the ocean House,
waterworks and "big mill." The
bank along "Coburg"Street Was
Cannon Park. The southern part
of Essex street bore two other
names— Wright and Norfolk.
Blake Street west of Eldon` was
then named Thomas Street.
Bennett Street from South to
Bayfield road was known as
McNab, for part of the distance,
then Tilt. (Tilt is now a short
street running north off Bennett.
The CPR had arrived in good
time to get on this rnap, which
also shows the CPR and GNW
telegraph offices on. the Square
at West Street.' Four hotels are
