Continuous banking service offered
The Royal Bank of Canada is
planning a ';,;new I'service...a
"first" in Canadian
banking...which is designed to
look after the basic banking
requirements of customers on a
24-hour, everyday basis.
Called "Bankette Servipe" the
proJect i•nvol-ves computer-based,
automated banking units installed
in the exterior walls of up to $100
daily
Initially,
Banketteunits are
being installed in 14 selected
Toronto area .locations and are
slated to go into operation July 29.
If they prove successful, says.
R.C. -Frazee a vice-president of
the Royal, similar units are
expected to be set up in other
Canadian centres.
"We feel., that • Bankettes
represent a truly significant•step
in the right direction of providing
service when it is convenient for
the custo, wer. and not just mean it
is convenient" for the bank" he
said.'
He pointethout thatu•in today's
fast-moving, mobile society there
was no way, short of 24-hour
service. in which fixed branch
banking hours can be devised to
meet everybody's• needs.
He added that, eventually,
Bankette units need not be limited
to branch locations, but that they

Key to Bankette service is a'
special c' magnetically -striped
plastic card which is available
free of charge on application from
the Royal. This card, the size of
an ordinary chargecard, contains'
in scrambled electrontc form the
c'ustomer's - individual
identification nu.iil.tier as well °as
the numbers of his bank 'accounts.
It can be used with any Bankette,
unit.
To operate a Bankette unit, the
diil
custer inserts the.,card into a
slot and then .uses the unit's
keyboard to ' punch ' in from
memory his or her own security
code number. If the information
provided ._ by • the' customer
matches -that contained on the
card, the -customer can then
proceed TOtransact his or her
business. However,' if the
irination does not match the
Bankette unit will not -proceed.
In fact,•.aker "the third
ttnsirccessful at•tenipt to match
information, the unit will retain
the card and will issue a receipt
advising that the card holder will
be contacted by -branch staff next
day, This safety feature prevents
finders of a lost or stolen card
trorn arriving at the card holder's
security code number by the trial
and error process.
,There will„ be no special
charges levied for making use of
Bankette service, except in the
case of cash withdrawals from
chequing and savings accounts for
which a fee of 25 cents per
transaction will he charged.
Mr. Frazee noted that a major
feature of the Bankette unit is,that
it issues a receipt for every
transaction, thereby giving
evidence of ekactly what the unit
has recorded. A duplicate record
is retained for next -day
verification and processing by.
bank staff.
Another` feature is that cash
withdrawals are limited to two
occasions for every 24 hours.
Each time a withdrawal is njade,
the uffit erases one of the allotted
withdrawal uses from the card
and this is noted by 'the unit's
clock mechanism. , The unit
dispenses cash in amounts of
either' $25. or $150.
. The' Bankette service project
being introduced in Toronfo-
represents an investment of
approximately $1 million by the
Royal. The Bankette units
themselves cost in the vicinity, of
$50,000 ,,each and weigh about
2;800 pounds.
,Even though Bankette units can
handle approximately 98 .per4rer>:t
'of all personal ba;,nk»fg
transactions that customers now
make at the tellers', wicket, Mr.
Frazee said that the new
automated service in no way
poses a threat to The -job secp city
of bank staff. '
"Our experience -- and -
