The Goderich Signal-Star, 1972-06-29, Page 5n*onJuIy 2 6 Huron Country 'Playhouse will open on schedule On July 26, "bringing' for the first time professidhal summer theatre to the area. The idea is the brainstorm of a groupprominent andedi Ldcated: citizens whqrmake up t.h.e playhouse's Board of Directors. _.1 They"include Bill Cochrane and Bruce Sully of Goderich; Mrs. Peter Ivey of London; john Payne, Mrs. Wm. Schlegel, Mrs, Griffen Thomas, of Grand Bend; Mrs. Mel Gaiser of Exeter;.and Gray Knapp of Parkhill, who, .together with (James Murphyrtisti.c director, conceived the idea for the theatre. • The property, a deserted farm jilst two, miles from Grand Benij, has a large barn which is being converted into, a . permanent summer theatre. In the ° r meantime, however, a large tent will provide a° temporary theatre for the six week season planned for this summer. It is hoped,' however, that a portion'of the barn will be open for use this year. Converting a barn into a theatre i„, poses major, problems, big then the layout of a barn makes a kind of "natural" theatre. The idea -developed long ago in the Eastern seaboard' states. uWen residents left the cities, for country and- seaside, acting +ti•oupes followed. Others went in search of places..to rehearse their fall productions away from the , heat of such theatre centres as New York Cit;. Barns, of course, were used because they were "natural" theatres. Now there are more than 100 successful barn theatres in existence and many, of Ifie..m„a.reas.:, elaborately appointed as the city tlu atres they once were trying to escape froth. Plans for' the season are accelerating daily; the professional company has now been signed and will arrive in Gr nd Bend for rehearsals on the —lth of July. Interviews are being held daily for the staff of publicity people, ushers, box office personnel, props people, and a cook and housekeeper. Also, actors are needed for the final show df, the season: Dirty Work at.The Crossroads, an - old fashioned melodrama which will N use talented local residents to act with the professional company. Also, volunteer people of all ages are needed to pitch in for the cleanup and patch up operation ' now going on daily at"•the playhouse site. Producer Murphy is grateful for the support he 'is receiving from . local business leaders and he hppes the etitir"e"ar—wfirg ud—rtre—: a 4, a project, which in time could make a .significant contribution to the area.
