The Goderich Signal-Star, 1972-06-22, Page 20DIRERII HSIGl1A ,-ST , pTHUBSDAX, JUNl 22. 19"12 Well Father's Day has come and gone and we probably all have some happy memories of -happenings on this day. Mine is of a gift to her father by my little granddaughter- Heather age 7 (I think!) This was one of thosepa per • plate wall hangings, very wellowe decorated with crayoned flower's in - and a snap shot fastened the sl lows of all this. The snaptows her father on one of the-feastdays, Cutting ' Christmas, I think, the turkey. Father is up to his -elbows in cut turkey, he hasn't had time to shave and you can just see or feel his haste in getting this large bird cut into many pieces for his large family - many of 'them with _ husbands and tamily of their own, and it is a sight to see. It is simply titled - MY "DAD - -... and it tells. a. tale .of -poor• old -dad every Christmas, Easter and a great Amany . other important occasions each year -, it is. just PRICELESS. In my June first column, I used - a few sentences from the beautiful prose poem 'Desiderata', which I • Tfeetwas.written for -OUR -lav and times. Whenever I read orhearit, it is ••such a terrific writing I. feel I should say' Amen' when it is over. It has been on T.V. several tinier Joan Crawford, V1 .ent Price and More recently beautifully recited by Lorne green on the Johnny Cash Show. A thoughtful reader, one who must , be Well acquainted with Goderich, •writes from ,,London that we have' a beautifully illuminated scroll of `Desiderata' in our fine Museum and Mr. Scotchmer or Mrs. Nanz would be glad to°show it to us.- There, right under euur noses.: tiut how often do you".warrd.er° t=aro' ou'r• own .museum'`? The reader knew the artist, John Spittal, and has other scrolls which are very beautiful, done by the same artist: We are-- very fortunate to have this artist's work in our museum and Wscmrettttre-I—hope—om—L— ondo friend will send the article which she wrote on him and his work, so • that we may learn more about this man. She tells of a very interesting. disclosure regarding.. the origin of this work Desiderata and since I know more and more people are reading or buying posters for their homes, `inscribed with this ' prose poem, here, are her findings: Taken -from Canadian Magazine or February 19,-1972, in answer to a question, • Desiderata begins: "&Go placidly amid the noise and haste and remember what peace `µere mase nh shot"e " w s exactly 306 elegant words, and in - many posters and other published forms it is attributed thus: - "Found in .old St. Paul's Church, Baltimore; dated 1692." Itis, however, the work of Max Ehrmann, a Terre , Haute, Ind. businessman -lawyer, who wrote ij` in 1927. It is to be found today. in the Poems of Max Ehrmann, ,{published in 1948, St" _Paul's.- Church credit was accidental. According to Rev., Henry S. Haller, administrative assistant of St. Paul's - which_ does, indeed, date back to 4-6-92 - Desiderata gotits first big public e'xposure during the Korean War, • when„chaplains used it in religious services. ., Its biggest boost, • and the one. that caused so much confusion,, from Rev. Frederick Ward Kates, Minister of St. Paul's from 1956 to '61. During the Lentin season Kates used to putt in the pews • mimeographed copies of sayings and -poems that appealed to him. Orte of the poems was Desiderata. The authorship was apparently ” ltot Acknowledged On these pew sheets, which did, however, have at the bottorn the words: St'Paul 's 'Church, Baltimore, 1692: These words were put otY,, not to suggest a uthor'sbip, but to pinpoint the place'+ Since then, with.its growing popt1arity, the poein has been reprltted Many times often -giving credit to St. Pai 1's and 1692. •:This is illegal - a U fact that capset the „Crescendo Publishing Co. of flettoncOritinnitig concern. Petite assume, because of- the date 1692 that the work is in the public domain. The most recent problem has been with the recording of Desiderata put out by W,ar! WI' Brothers, (recited by Les Crane, with a choral background). They omitted the proper credits, unknowingly. They settled out of , court and haveigince altered the label . " Many still make the pilgramage to St. Paul's expecting to see the poem• inscribed there in aged stone. Rev. Haller reports, "No week goes by without someone coming to look for it. It is no fun telling them it's not to be found here. They all go away terribly disappointed." The- ending of Desiderata should cheer them: With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, itis still• a- beautiful world." lTow to 'get an'to Svork = 'The' Garden Club are having their nice Flower Show this Saturday and the Goderich Art Club has been invited to show flower paintings to go along with it, ry The show is always very, interestThg so this we.hope will be a nice addition. • •,p resident Wendy Hoernig is worried about the crazy weather we've been having and suggests, _that even if we have a bad day before the show - don't drop the, idea for your entry.
